DJL 235 #1 August 15, 2006 I know that distilled spirits like scotch don't improve if you leave them unopened but if I find and OLD bottle of liquor that has been opened, will it have gone bad?"I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
freeflir29 0 #2 August 15, 2006 I think it depends on how it's stored. If it's somewhat temp controlled and out of the sunlight I think it'll be fine. If it's at the mercy of sun and varying outside temps it's probably going to be effected. Just my .02C
Clownburner 0 #3 August 15, 2006 QuoteI know that distilled spirits like scotch don't improve if you leave them unopened but if I find and OLD bottle of liquor that has been opened, will it have gone bad? Usually they're fine for a long time in bottles, probably hundreds of years, if they're stored under reasonable conditions (no extreme heat, direct sunlight, etc). Some 'cream' liquors contain actual cream, and will spoil once opened though, and some spirits will taste very badly if they've ever been allowed to get hot (like wine or beer, for example).7CP#1 | BTR#2 | Payaso en fuego Rodriguez "I want hot chicks in my boobies!"- McBeth
VectorBoy 0 #4 August 15, 2006 Tequila does. Once opened it should be consumed shortly there after. Preferably without clothing.
Buried 0 #5 August 15, 2006 generally if its been stored well, in a glass bottle it should be fine. my rule of thumb tho is that if it is over 40% it would be fine. touched some liqour from the 60's and 70's at my grandmothers place not long ago. Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?

AndyMan 7 #7 August 15, 2006 Once opened, it really depends on how much air is in the bottle. Oxygen is the killer of good flavors, so an open bottle with just an inch of air will last nearly forever, while a bottle with just an inch of liquid will spoil quickly. A good alternative is to buy a can of compressed nitrogen from a wine store specifically for this purpose. The nitrogen will settle in a layer at the bottom of the bottle just above the liquid, and protect it from the oxygen above. _Am__ You put the fun in "funnel" - craichead. That's what I'm afraid of. I have a bottle of Bailey's at home that I opened, put some on ice, and haven't used any...in maybe a year. I was told by grandpa that I should try it anyways since the alchohol shouldn't let anything bad grow in it.
DJL 235 #9 August 15, 2006 I'd toss that bailey's. It's not like it's an expensive bottle anyway. The bottle in question for me is Johnny Walker Red, something I'd just poor down the drain without caring, especially since I have JW Black and JW Blue on hand. It's about 1/2 full and there's some separation of sugars that have dropped to the bottom of the bottle. It's sat in a living room for about 30 years. Not direct sunlight but it's been in light, no fading on the label. Fuck it, I'll mix it with Coke and start posting when I'm nice and slushy."I encourage all awesome dangerous behavior." - Jeffro Fincher
