Does Liquor go bad?

Recommended Posts

I know that distilled spirits like scotch don't improve if you leave them unopened but if I find and OLD bottle of liquor that has been opened, will it have gone bad?

Usually they're fine for a long time in bottles, probably hundreds of years, if they're stored under reasonable conditions (no extreme heat, direct sunlight, etc).

Some 'cream' liquors contain actual cream, and will spoil once opened though, and some spirits will taste very badly if they've ever been allowed to get hot (like wine or beer, for example).

generally if its been stored well, in a glass bottle it should be fine. my rule of thumb tho is that if it is over 40% it would be fine. touched some liqour from the 60's and 70's at my grandmothers place not long ago. :D

Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?

Once opened, it really depends on how much air is in the bottle.

Oxygen is the killer of good flavors, so an open bottle with just an inch of air will last nearly forever, while a bottle with just an inch of liquid will spoil quickly.

A good alternative is to buy a can of compressed nitrogen from a wine store specifically for this purpose. The nitrogen will settle in a layer at the bottom of the bottle just above the liquid, and protect it from the oxygen above.

That's what I'm afraid of. I have a bottle of Bailey's at home that I opened, put some on ice, and haven't used any...in maybe a year. I was told by grandpa that I should try it anyways since the alchohol shouldn't let anything bad grow in it.

I'd toss that bailey's. It's not like it's an expensive bottle anyway.

The bottle in question for me is Johnny Walker Red, something I'd just poor down the drain without caring, especially since I have JW Black and JW Blue on hand. It's about 1/2 full and there's some separation of sugars that have dropped to the bottom of the bottle. It's sat in a living room for about 30 years. Not direct sunlight but it's been in light, no fading on the label. Fuck it, I'll mix it with Coke and start posting when I'm nice and slushy.

If you're gonna do that, just pass me the bottle of Blue please.

Since johnny walker tastes exactly the same regardless of spoilage, I think you'll be just fine. I have 10-year old bottles of single malt that are perfect, but there shouldn't be any sugars to crystallize in real scotch. :S

Yeah, there are even sugars in the Blue. It's still damn tasty. I got the bottle of Black specifically so I wouldn't give in to my cravings to drink the whole thing at once.

I think this calls for a BYOBB Boogie.

Everybody bring your own bad booze and we'll all test it out together...last man standing takes all.

The Farm...any weekend.
My reality and yours are quite different.

Inventory: 30-40 mini-bottles from my bartender days in the early 80's, they have never been opened but some of them are 30+% reduced in volume, the ones i've tried are OK

2 quarts grain alcohol - will never go bad

various others: scotch, whiskey, rum from honeymoon, vodka, gin, Kahlua, Tia Maria, and my favorite San Miguel rum from Ecuador when I worked in the Galapagos Islands

generally drink the scotch - JW Red or Black
Give one city to the thugs so they can all live together. I vote for Chicago where they have strict gun laws.
