SpeedRacer 1 #1 August 17, 2006 I work with a Japanese guy, an Indian guy, and a Nigerian guy. I was talking about how Americans love to eat with their fingers. Peel & eat shrimp, steamed crabs, fried chicken, corn on the cob, barbecue ribs, etc etc. My parents used to have a lot of guests from Europe & they weren't as enthusiastic. Especially when it comes to picking crabs or something. In Baltimore we have these big crab feasts where you sit around a table covered with newspapers, & eat steamed crabs seasoned with Old Bay But a lotta foreigners can't seem to understand why the crab meat hasn't already been prepared first. They don't like eating things with their fingers. So why did this develop in America, and not so much in the countries most americans came from? LisaM 0 #2 August 17, 2006 American's are lazy. Plain and simple. Finger foods are easy to eat and easy cleanup (no utensils to wash). ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder?
NWFlyer 2 #3 August 17, 2006 And yet we eat sushi with chopsticks when really, the proper way is to eat it with the fingers. Sashimi, of course, should be eaten with chopsticks."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. One thing I have wondered for a long time is why people think the Chinese are so smart. If they were all that smart they would have come up with the idea for forks instead of those dumbass chopsticks! Walt
Mostly_Harmless 0 #5 August 17, 2006 QuoteAmerican's are lazy. Plain and simple. Finger foods are easy to eat and easy cleanup (no utensils to wash). How is picking crab from it's shell lazy? I would call those Europeans lazy for wanting it already prepared out of it's shell . One someone says finger foods to me I think of all the times I got together with a bunch of my friends at a diner or something and order some waffle fries and chicken fingers and pig out. Call me lazy but those times were the best._________________________________________ www.myspace.com/termvelocity
PLFXpert 0 #6 August 17, 2006 At home, I prefer to eat a lot of things with my fingers. Particularly asparagus. Somtimes I use toothpicks to make it fun.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
LisaM 0 #7 August 17, 2006 I'll give you the crab thing... I have heard some serious grunting doing that (none for me, thanks). I am not saying I don't like finger foods, don't get me wrong. But it is the easy way out.... aren't we American's notorious for that? ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder?
aprilcat 0 #8 August 17, 2006 Are these guys 'Fill In the number"-generation American or are they actually right FROM these places? I've seen many Nigerians eat with their fingers; even soupy-grainy foods. I don't understand why some French eat sandwiches with a knife and fork. They drop more of the sandwich that way but look elegant (?) picking it back up with a fork. Grab the damned thing and eat it already!~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo! tigra 0 #13 August 17, 2006 Actually, I don't think its an "American" thing at all. People from a lot of different cultures/ countries eat with their hands and some kind of bread (or tortilla).
