2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 for around $38k before incentives

How about a Toyota Tacoma with all the options? Maybe even an FJ Cruiser?

What he said. If you're set on an SUV, the FJ Cruiser is cool, has Toyota reliability behind it, and apollard can hook you up. ;)

I wouldn't buy a Ford Escape (hybrid or not) unless they've dramatically improved the reliability. If you don't drive much, your bank account shouldn't vary too much on fuel consumption anyhow.

Make sure you get the optional passenger seat cover. I prefer the redhead model.

Those seat covers can be very high maintenance and costly. I would highly recommend that you Rent or use the disposable types. Each of the Models also have their inherent faults..

The Redhead Model you mentioned tend to run Hot very easily and is generally not compatible with adding other models. This model is notoriously temperamental and generally somewhat unstable.

The Blonde Model while generally visually appealing lacks the Processing power to be of much use and can be an extreme drain on resources.

The Brunette Models are generally over rated and of questionable quality. Also the pedestal required for them to be placed upon takes up waaay to much room.

The optional seat covers are defiantly more hassle than they are worth.:P:D:D

Don't do it. They really are crappy vehicles. Infact most of the Jeeps made since the 1990s are complete crap. Unibody construction, a basic cheap SUV that you pay too much for due to the name. If you want something worth a crap and you have to have a Jeep, go buy a CJ. Put a 350 conversion in it, an Atlas II transfer case and Dana 44s. Then you'll have something that's freak'n bullet proof, with an actual frame and something that deserves to be called a Jeep. The steep spiral downward started when they made the Liberty. Not a bad car/SUV, just definately not a damned Jeep.

You might be surprised. I suggest taking a look at this fuel savings calculator:

http://www.fordvehicles.com/escapehybrid/how/index.asp?movie=savings

It adds up - I put in that I only drive 10 miles per day (pretty true), and that my last fillup cost $60 (definitely true), and it came back with a savings of about $9000 per year. That's close to an extra 400 jumps per year.
Trapped on the surface of a sphere. XKCD

Something seems a little off with that math. In order to save $9000/year on gas, you'd first have to be spending $9000/year. If you drive 10 miles per day, that's ~3650 miles per year. Are you only getting 1 mpg currently? :S;)

New car needed. Something I can drive more than 4 months a year. Something with room. Something that doesn't look like I'm compensating for something. (Because I'm NOT, bitches.)

Ideas? I like this Jeep...

If you like it, then buy it. I think $38K is fair for a Grand Cherokee, and like you said it is before incentives. I don't think the value is there compared to others in its class--my opinion only though. You may want to wait until DiamlerChrysler provides a FlexFuel or Diesel option (the Diesel will add about $4-5K I'm guessing).

If you can't wait, have you looked at the Toyota 4Runner as a "competitive" comparison? A Dodge Durango may run you a little less money too (same company and underpinnings, etc).
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!
