2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland 4x4 for around $38k before incentives

Recommended Posts

New car needed. Something I can drive more than 4 months a year. Something with room. Something that doesn't look like I'm compensating for something. (Because I'm NOT, bitches.)

Ideas? I like this Jeep...

Get a Hummer.

Everybody likes hummers.

well I think you can actually get them in a diesel format...

and I agree with Clay... if/when I get another vehicle it will be a diesel and I'll convert/set it up to used bio-diesel...

I love my Jeep Liberty, but it gets horrible gas mileage. I bought it before the gas prices got so high. If I was buying it now, I'd reconsider because of that.

I am really considering getting a Prius with the cost of gas. But I still need a truck just to pull things when I move back north like snowmobiles and stuff but I wont drive that thing everyday. For me the cost of gas is kicking my ass. I just bought a 06 Maxima which on the hw gets about 28-30 a gal but it still hurts to dump 20 gallons in the tank.
If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!

A Toyota minivan comes in 4-wheel drive, I believe, and will do all of those things with much better gas mileage.

And it definitely won't look like you're compensating for something  A Honda Pilot is not quite as good on fuel as the minivan, and it's noisier, but it does look more macho.

Both are likely to be much more reliable mechanically than the Jeep.

Unless you need to frequently pull a heavy trailer, stay away from the big SUVs. Shitty mileage and high insurance rates. I am partial to wagons myself. If you want something that gets decent mileage and can be driven in shitty weather, go for something with all wheel drive like an Saab(9 5 S), Audi (A4 Avant Quattro) or Volvos. Very comfy and reliable. Can be pricey, but after the Beemer you dumped, they should be chump change. Another option, the Subaru WRX wagon, a pocket rocket sleeper that is a blast to drive.

Jeep Grand Cherokee:

Very Overpriced and does not hold resale value well at all.

Spotty quality issues.. You either get a Good one or a Bad one. Very little inbetween.

Notorious for Transmission/Transaxle problems.

Poor Gas Mileage.

I would look at a Toyota instead. You may spend just a little more but you get a vehicle that is better made and holds it value.

One more option if you have your heart set on a Jeep Grand Cherokee is to find either one year or two year lease return.

Like I said before, These things have horrible resale and you could pick up one for close to half price that way.

Anytime you buy a new car and drive it off the lot, You just threw Thousands of dollars out the window. Buying Low Mileage One and two year lease returns lets someone else take the big hit and you get a car that still relitively new, Still under factory warranty and costs a lot less.

Te disadvantage is that you will pay a slightly higher interest rate on a used car as opposed to a new one.

Check Edmunds.com to get the TMV (True Market Value) of the vehicle you are looking at. Avoid KBB.com (Kelly Blue Book) as their prices are not as accurate and heavily skewed towards dealers.

For $38K, you can get a fully-loaded Ford Escape Hybrid. The only 4X4 SUV that gets you 39 MPG.

Just looked at it. Nice car. Surprising power and pick-up. Definitely considering.

Thanks to all for the suggestions!!

Make sure you get the optional passenger seat cover. I prefer the redhead model.;)
