Allergic to my wifes cat.

Recommended Posts

My wife and I recently bought a house and she is going to move her cat into it. I am allergic to it. I like the cat, it is nice and all, but I hate sneezing and feeling like crap because of it. Does anyone live with a sig. other or spouse that has an animal that causes your allergies to go crazy? What do you do to keep it from being a problem?

If your wife has any sense, she should be sympathetic to your allergies and make your health a priority over having her cat in the house with you.

Just my 2 cents. About everyone I know who's allergic to cats had a S.O. who gave up their pets for their marriage's sake. :P

I agree. My husband and son know the rule is no furry pets cause I'm allergic. I have no desire either to live miserably or waste away my salary on meds. My son isn't all that thrilled but is as understanding as one could expect. ;)

Some people get used to the cat if they live with it on a permanent basis, but are still allergic to any other cats.

Hope you find a solution... OR (See attached)

:D

That's cute.:P

All I can say is "Puuuullllease, people.":S:P

Allergy meds at Costco (which I take daily) are a mere $4 for a pack of 400 which lasts me almost two months! Granted, I only take one/day b/c my allergies are minor compared to some. So, we'll say $16 for two months for you severe allergy sufferers.

As for the pussy, I hear it helps if they're shaved.;) Seriously, Billy's brother moved in with a love-el-ly woman who adores her very fluffy kitty. Charlie looked/still looks SOOOOO cute with his new hair cut; nakie except for a fluffy face, fluffy shoes and a fluffy tail tip.:D The haircut partnered with an allergy pill worked wonders and Billy's brother is perfectly fine.:)
Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

I was severly allergic to cats until I got one and now recently another. My only adivce, Claritin (or antihistime) and a Mucinex (or decongestant). I am generally miserable for the first 3 days around a new cat (I'm used to mine) and feel like hell but after that it clears up.

I have to be vigilant about washing my hands after petting them.

All I can say is that you really are not very allergic to cats. If the original poster has allergies like yours, maybe he can get along with the cat. If he has cat allergies like mine, he can tell within 5 minutes or less of entering a house whether a cat lives there, maybe 20 minutes if on allergy drugs. His wife needs a reality check (or she's trying to tell him something ;) )

Really? She knows you're allergic to her cat and she is going to do that to you? Sorry but thats really insensitive. Its an indoor cat? Maybe it can learn to be an outdoor cat.

I'm really allergic to cats too, and I hate it because I like cats. Allergy medicine does nothing. I still sneeze my head off and feel like crap around cats.

I love my dogs, but if my husband were allergic to them, I'd find them a new, loving home. Hopefully close by so I could still see them.

I have tried to talk to her about it, she knows I am allergic to it, but I just can't get her to commit to leaving it at her parents house. Currently the cat is an inside/outside cat. It goes out whenever someone lets it out and it comes in when it is ready to come in. It is not in a subdivision neighborhood or anything like that, so the cat does not have to deal with streets. We are moving to a new house in a subdivision. My wife is worried that the cat will roam the street and get ran over, someone takes the cat, or it gets killed from a neighbor who does not like cats. So now the indoor/outdoor kitty is now becoming a 100% inside kitty. I like the cat and all, but I just get all stuffed up and cranky when I am around cats that shed really bad. When I was living with my parents, we had a short haired cat and I was perfectly fine with that one. I could let it sit in my lap and everything would be fine. My wife's cat is a Siamese and it sheds really BAD! We have had a few arguments about rules for the cat. At this point in time, she will not get rid of or leave the cat at her parents house. I hate all this. On one hand, I want to be supportive of my wife and on the other hand, I do not want to medicate myself every day for the rest of the cats life. I hate the thought of taking a pill just to live at my own house. I am not a fan of meds either. [:/] Oh well, guess I will stop bitching and get over it and accept how things are.

I'm allergic to cats too. But I've had the same one for 17 years now, and we have a second one (Maine Coon cat), and neither of them cause me major problems. Both shed, but we brush the Maine Coon cat every day, and that helps. He loves the attention, and we don't have to vacuum as much either! The only time I really have problems is if I get a cat hair in my eyes.

I take allergy meds maybe once a month max because of the cats, though I do use eye drops more often. I'd say to keep the cat and see what happens...

I have no desire to be on maintenance meds at such a young age. I am miserable around hairy animals.

Think about if you grew up allergic to a food. Say ice cream. Every time you ate it, you threw up. Do you think you would LIKE ice cream? Even if you could eat it someday without throwing up? Doubtful.

That's how I am with animals. As a child my throat would swell making it difficult to breathe. My eyes would itch and swell up. I cringe when I am around dogs and cats for that reason.

Just a different perspective....

As a fellow sufferer.... this is how I feel exactly!!!

I have restless leg syndrome.... antihistamines aggrivate it.... so now we have side effects associated with it too. No thanks!

I'm also very allergic to cats......so understand ...couldn't the cat stay at your wife's mothers place and your wife visit there.......no amount of meds would make me feel 100% with a puss in da house + sounds like you're the same.......Good luck!

...So your not more important to her than the cat...There is a message in there somewhere that should be coming through loud and clear. Your next discussion should not be about the cat.[:/]

I'm really sorry that your wife is that selfish. If her parents' home is close by, then the prudent thing to do is to leave the cat there and let her go visit every now and then.

Not wanting to put you on the hot seat but ask her this: "are you willing to make me suffer for as long as your cat lives? How would you like it if you were allergic to cats and I wanted to keep one?"

Make her think about it... maybe she will realize her priorities were out of whack...

Jeremy,

I'm allergic to cats too... which is interesting since I have one. :S Anyhoo... what you need to do is put a hepa air filter in your bedroom (or multiple rooms). But keep the cat out of the bedroom. Since you spend so many hours in this room sleeping, etc :P it helps a lot to keep this room cat dander free. I bet you will notice a difference.

Good idea, that is, if she's adamant about keeping the cat. Make her a deal... she gets to keep the cat if she buys the air filter. ;)

Would she agree to bathe the cat weekly? It'd get rid of a lot of the hair, and maybe keep the dander down.

Of course, it would piss the cat off, but that way you both get to suffer.
