Allergic to my wifes cat.

You know, I have never been tested for all my allergy stuff before. Is that a big test? Expensive? Painful?

It's a great idea if your allergies are really bad. You can learn to manage them better and find medicine that works best for you.

If you have insurance the test isn't too $$$. Every test and shot has been worth every single $ I spent! I can breathe, I'm not a snot ball, it's wonderful :)
It is painful at parts however they have come a long way. It used to be much worse. When I was in 2nd grade and getting tested for the first time it felt like the nurse took a pin and just scraped all the way down my back. Back then they would take a plate looking thing w. the equivilant of Visene bottles upside down hanging from it, to drop allergins on your skin (50+ at a time). Your skin was then scratched and then you are left for XXminutes to react. My nurse was so bad it felt like she started at the top and just took one swift swipe to prick them all.

Now, it is FAR LESS PAINFUL. They place drops on your back in much the same manner (that was never painful) except now they have a little tool or thin ruler that has small needles on it (only a few cenemeters big- just enough to break the skin). They take care of 5-10 dots of allergins at a time. I hardly felt anything! A bee sting hurt much worse. It was the easiest part of the test this time around.

The bad part for me this time (February 2006) was the shots in the arm. Now, they put cream on your arm to numb it, I never had that before, it was very nice. Because I reacted so badly to so much on my back test, I needed a ton of shots to make sure I was really allergic to it all and to see what degree I was allergic. It was very painful to get 12 shots in one arm, one after the other. Then to get another 10 on the opposite arm. I was on the brink of tears and I don't mind needles but this was a tad too much.

You may not need any shots at all or you could only need 1 in each arm so please don't be scared off by it. Getting tested and shots are the best thing I've done to help my allergies.

Big? Can be.

Expensive? Depends on your insurance.

Painful? On a scale of 1 to 10 with one being a needle scratch and 10 being Chuck Norris touching you with his little pinkey and your head then exploding like you're a Nazi that just looked at the Arc of the Covenant . . . maybe a 1.1.

Then again, if you end up being allergic to, say for instance, 100 out of the 100 substances being checked, it may end up feeling more like you were covered in ants and they're all biting you at the same time.

So, it kind a varies. ;)

Some ideas:

- Keep cat out of bedroom
- Get the cash washed once or twice a week (it really helps). You could pay a catsitter (a lot) to do this job if you hate it.
- HEPA air filter (and buy lots of extra filters in advance; and replace them regularly; or they become useless)
- Get a cleaning lady to wash your home more often than usual.
- Buy extra bed linen. That way, the bed can be changed more often.
- Get your wife to wash her hands and face well before she touches you. Especially important before doing the naughty. (I noticed that even this causes me big problems -- washing makes a difference)

It's a losing battle, especially if you are as allergic as I am, though one of my exes had a cat. But if you have extra $$$ you can reduce your pain by quite a lot. Don't rely on anti-allergy medication alone!

I wish I could keep my dog out of the bedroom. But, he's just too cute pressing my arm with his wet nose to see if I'll tell him "No" and when I don't (which is always:D) he jumps up, curls up as small as he can next to me, lets out a big, howling yawn and lays his head next to mine on the pillow...

Now how can I resist?:P

I wake up and I can't touch my eyes or anything until I get up and wash my hands and arms. Otherwise, I'm pretty much screwed.:D

But he's cute and he loves me and that's most important.;)
Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
