Allergic to my wifes cat.

Would she agree to bathe the cat weekly? It'd get rid of a lot of the hair, and maybe keep the dander down.

Of course, it would piss the cat off, but that way you both get to suffer.

Bathing would be a PITA... I try to brush our cats every other day. You wouldn't believe how much cat hair gets sucked into the Rainbow vacuum cleaner's water basin weekly! :o

That is the #1 rule that we have come up with, the cat does not come in the bedroom. I hate pet hair too. It gets all over clothes and when you go to work, you do not look very clean if you have pet hair everywhere. Not sure, but that is my take.

Cat dander/allergens are in the air as well. So, be sure to get a hepa air filter for your bedroom too. Also, make sure your house air filters are made to reduce allergens. They're only a little more expensive than the regular ones.

Cleaning the air is what you need to target next.

Don't get me wrong, I greatly understand and appreciate different perspectives.

And not saying this is true for you but I happen to believe a lot of health issues are really mental. Using your example:

Quote

As a child my throat would swell making it difficult to breathe. My eyes would itch and swell up. I cringe when I am around dogs and cats for that reason.

It's like Pavlov's dog salivating at a bell, even w/out food.

I certainly don't want anyone to have a pet who doesn't want one or feels the need to cringe. In fact, I fully support your decision b/c too often for one reason or another someone who doesn't care for animals ends up with one (via a spouse, the spouse leaves, etc.) and the animal is left neglected. I'd much rather the animal be taken to animal care & control in such situations.

Still, it can be hard for non-animal people to understand the love animal-people have for their pets. It truly is like having a child. I don't have enough facts to argue, but in some cases when someone says: "I can't believe she'd keep the cat. If she loves you, she wouldn't." I might be inclined to say the same could be said in the opposite way. I.E.: "If he loved her, he'd take a pill and proper precautions." Thus, such a debate is pointless.

If one has a personal issue with modern medicine, then that's a whole different debate altogether.

Being that I love animals so...I have a daily routine that takes me a full 30 minutes.

I vacuum the entire house (which is mostly tile except the bedrooms), lint roller the furniture and spray anti-dander/bacterial spray daily. We have the top-of-the-line air filter and I change it twice as often as is recommended. I also take a daily allergy pill.

My arms even breakout in little red dots sometimes while I'm rolling around the floor with my dog playing. They itch like hell. But it's temporary and goes away as soon as I wash my arms.

I still have two kitties and a doggie and I play with them, love them, squeeze them & kiss them bunches daily.

For me, I would suffer far greater w/out them.:)

Yes, it is exactly like pavlov's dog.

You are right.... sometimes we cannot see the other side of the coin. I cannot understand how someone would want an animal in the house enough to force someone they love to medicate. But, I am a "non-animal" person so I suppose it would be hard for me.

It was a conversation I had with my husband before we married because he used to have 2 rotweilers. I suppose it can be as important of a question as "do you want kids" before marriage.

People with cat allergies are not all affected exactly the same way. People without the allergy or with can deal with it via small doses of over the counter meds really have no idea how bad it is for the people that react more strongly.

If over the counter meds and painful attention to cleaning work for you, then, good for you, but people should be aware that this is simply NOT an option for everyone.

I can understand that, and I wouldn't argue it, b/c I genuinely believe "To each their own." For me, obviously, I'd be inclined not to understand why taking a pill a day is such a big deal.:D

I'm looking for an inside/outside cat for my other cat to play with. She has been bringing in other live animals, such as birds and frogs to play with but that's getting old. Send me the cat. I live kinda in the country. I have cat doors so the cat can come and go as it pleases. There is plenty of stuff away from the road to entertain the cat. I live in TN and you and your wife can come visit the cat any time.

and it would get tuna daily.:)

This is VERY good news, indeed.

At least it will be apparent to your wife you are making every effort. I sincerely hope it works, but if not it will be a far easier decision for her to make other arrangements for kitty if she can see you cared enough to try.:)

I hope so. I hope she does not choose kitty over me.

I'm serious about taking the cat if you need a good home. THe cat would be spoiled rotten. I am the biggest pushover when it comes to animals.

Hypothetically speaking, I would never choose kitty over Billy...

Still speaking hypothetically, however, it's entirely possible if I gave up kitty for Billy I'd later subconsciously resent Billy. That partnered with my depression brought on by lack of furry friends in my life would be an ugly situation indeed; probably leading to the end of our relationship.:(

;):P

All I can say is: Thank goodness Billy loves animals, too.;):P

Please see yourself to the nearest Animal Care & Control Center, pronto.

Thank you.

;):P:)

yea, but I can't go in one of those places. I would leave with all of them or in tears. I was wondering if I could drive up there and one of their people would come get my cat and let her pick out a new friend.

I don't do well seeing animals caged. I'm not some Peta nut or anything like that, I'm just a big sucker for animals.

CostCo makes a brand of Claritin. I want to say its called Aller-clear. I should know, I take it all the time. Anyway.. its about 12 bucks for hundreds of pills and it works better for me than actual Claritin.
Doesnt totally alleviate my cat allergies but it works the best out of all of the allergy meds I've tried.

Good luck! I hope it works out for both you and the kitty!

You just reminded me...

Meridian, ChaosKitty uses Claritin, which doesn't do shizzal for me.

I use the Kirkland Signature brand Allergy Sinus which I think is their brand of Tylenol Allergy Sinus and that works wonders for me.

It's important to note to try several things and find what works for you.:)

Shots are also an option. They have improved ALL my allergies so much. I went to the doctor and was tested, he gasped at how red my back got. I'm severly allergic to everything but food, cockroaches, and mold. :S
