Slappie 9 #4 March 6, 2005 Wish I wasn't so cheap or I'd have HBO to be able to watch it. I used to pay for premium cable when the Saprano's were on. masterrig 1 #6 March 7, 2005 We've got satellite. Just about gave it up because the Sopranos weren't on... then, came Deadwood. I'm anxious to see, how far the 'dispute' between the town marshall and Swearingen goes. It's gonna get good. Chuck

aprilcat 0 #9 June 12, 2006 Happy third season, fellow Dead-heads!! Swearingen is still showing them how to get bloodstains off a bar room floor. Hearst has been in town for two shows (season 2 ending and season 3 beginning) and its OVER already. LOVE it!~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo! tbrown 26 #10 August 19, 2006 Finally got around to renting some Deadwood DVDs (I know, I'm always behind the times) and am really disappointed with a series that has so much potential. I think the writing is pathetic, mostly in the way that it uses the most offensive language possible, as often as possible, and in a manner that disrupts the viewers attempt to follow the story. I'm no Puritan about language either, as my many posts will show. And profanity has its place as a legitimate part of both language and in drama. To make a comparison with another one of my favorite cable series, "Dead Like Me", a show that I absolutely love, they used terms like "fucked up", "fuck you", "oh shit", "blowjob", etc in a very natural way, the way you would hear real people use those expressions in these times. It doesn't interfere with your ability to follow or enjoy the developing story. What I found with Deadwood, in the seven episodes I watched (all from the first season), there seems to be some rule that 15 seconds can't go by without calling somebody a "cunt" or a "cocksucker". I would even allow that those words per se can be used in a script legitimately. But let's first admit that culturally at least, most people would agree that these are considered among THE most offensive words in use. And to machine gun the audience with them throughout the story, often for no apparent reason than "this is Cable and we can do it if we fucking well want to", is just piss poor writing (and there - I just used a baddie myself, but made a point with it). It's like walking across sharp stones in your bare feet, you can't think about anything else besides how much it hurts to take every step. Where's the enjoyment in that ? I mean I can get that Deadwood was a mean nasty and bad smelling place without somebody yelling "cunt" in my face every five seconds. Does the writing improve at all in the second & third seasons ? I hope so, I'd even be willing to check it out if it has. Otherwise, I've seen all I need and Deadwood has failed to be the series it could've been. Your humble servant.....Professor Gravity ! aprilcat 0 #11 August 19, 2006 I didn't see the first season--I came in at season 2 and was immediately hooked because of the writing. No, the language is not cleaned up by then and I have a hard time watching it when my niece is here, but I find the scripts to be the most interesting part of show. I don't think its done because its on cable and they can get away with it, but to actually make the viewer uncomfortable in this uncomfortable place. There are a few characters who are spared bad language when they are present, though they use it in the privacy of their 'home', not the extent of the characters in the saloons, and mines. Remove the verbiage and you'll find dialogue quite Shakespearean, I believe, which is not a natural way of speaking. Peppering this with profanity solidifies that we're watching a 'play'. Perhaps this is what the creators wanted. It works for me. I'm fascinated every week how they get their ideas across through dialogue and I TIVO it or watch reruns to make sure I got the meaning. In short, they have no manners. They ARE disgusting, but since I didn't see season 1, I'm not sure if what I'm fascinated with is the same writing. I know the story has expanded where the lives of these people are hopelessly entwined and truthfully I don't even HEAR the cusswords that much anymore (it was a shock to the ears at first). Let me know if you continue watching and if your feelings change.~~April Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo!
masterrig 1 #12 August 19, 2006 In regard to the language on 'Deadwood', we don't really have any idea how people spoke in that time in our history. These were people of 'ill-repute' and every part of society. They were in search of gold and getting rich... quick. The words used in the show were around at that time and were used rather freely. Deadwood is not a 'slick' Hollyweird version of the American West. It is a well researched show with a lot of fact. It shows how people were in the gold-rush settlements. aprilcat 0 #16 August 20, 2006 I've never been to either (I don't gamble and I live in a 'tourist town'), but if I had to pick it would be Deadwood hands down. Something romantic about the west in the first place. What do you do when you go there?~~April P.S. there will NEVER be 'enough about the show' Do you watch it? Camelot II, the Electric Boogaloo! kbordson 8 #21 August 20, 2006 Quote From any of the pictures I've seen, it's all 'glitz' and all about the gamblin'. Chuck It's not all "glitz." It does have some more flashy casinos (like Costners Midnight Star and Gold Dust ), but it also has smaller casinos with "rougher" interiors that aren't glamourized (April, those are the ones that I like too). And honestly those are the ones that I can sit at the table longest before loosing the $20 that I had allocated to that fun.... And I some times even win. The city itself is fantastic. I know 100 years isn't "Historic" to some of the non-US types, but it's cool looking at the (re-done) old buildings of Deadwood. And the culture of the town ... maybe not as much of a caricature as the show protrays, and maybe a little played toward the tourist but still rugged. It's also fun to walk up to the present Boot Hill (it's been moved a couple of times due to development and probably some landslide issues that the town has) And it surrounded by the Hills!!!! Hard to think of a better way to spend a day (besides skydiving) than to be relaxing in the Black Hills (yesterday, took some 4 wheelers out to some land of a friend of mine, trails through Spearfish Canyon, took the Tommy, an MP5 This ends the non-paid programming and South Dakota Advertising portion of this show.
