Rookie120 0 #1 August 22, 2006 So as most people know I will be moving again. I pretty much have a good system for what needs to be done since I have done it enough times. I was just wondering what other people do when they move. Do they hire somebody to move for them or do they drive and do it themselves and which company do you go with. I personally like Penske. I dont have the cash to pay somebody to do it for me.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
Icon134 0 #2 August 22, 2006 It depends on if its across town or across the country... I'd rather do it myself it its across the country. but I'd just as soon get someone else to do it if its across the country.Livin' on the Edge... sleeping with my rigger's wife... Rookie120 0 #3 August 22, 2006 Lets say for the cause it's cross country. I once moved from one apt on the 1st floor to the 3rd and it cost me $450 to have to guys pack it up and move everything. I sat there and drank beer all day watching those guys drag all my stuff to the 3rd floor. Best $450 ever spent! If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck! LisaM 0 #4 August 22, 2006 I once hired movers to move my furniture 4 miles down the road. But when I moved cross country, I uhauled it. Uhaul = bad. Never again! ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder?

Rookie120 0 #6 August 22, 2006 Quote Uhaul = bad. Never again! In Michigan I was helping a friend move into his new house and we had a U-haul. I was driving in the middle of the busiest intersection in town and the engine blew. The rod snapped and punched a hole in the side of the engine block. Had to wait for a wrecker to tow the damn thing then we had to unload to blown truck into another piece of junk U-haul gave us in replacement. We could have done it quicker if we would have just used our pickupsIf you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
skymama 37 #7 August 22, 2006 Oooh, this brings back memories of moving from LA to AL and the U-Haul breaking down in the middle of the summer with 2 crying toddlers and 2 overheating cats in the car. It was not fun! The last couple of moves that I have had, I used my father, brothers and their trucks. It's nice having men in the family in the construction business! On thing I did read recently was to be cautious when using internet moving companies because they often sub out the work. The original company may check out just fine if you check out their references, but the people who actually move your stuff may have dozens of complaints against them. The article suggested using a local mover out of a phone book instead of the internet. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
Rookie120 0 #8 August 22, 2006 QuoteThe article suggested using a local mover out of a phone book instead of the internet. I think I read the same article. It maybe a local guy to come load your stuff but then they take it to the compnay who is going to haul it cross country. Kinda sneaky but I understand why those big movers do it. I have always gone with Penske Truck Rental. This will be my 5th long haul move with there trucks and never had 1 problem with them. The oldest truck I ever had was 2 years old with 26,000 miles on it. Still a new truck. Plus they haul ass on the highway. 70-75mph the entire way.If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
Thanatos340 1 #9 August 22, 2006 Always negotiated full Moving expenses into new Job Contract. Used Bekins. They show up one day, Pack everything for you. next day Truck shows up and they load it. I stay behind and clean up house.. Get to new house a couple days later while they unload and unpack. No Sweat. Now if I am going across town, Rent a U-Haul and get a couple friends to help. LisaM 0 #14 August 22, 2006 We had 2 tires blow on the fourth of July on Oklahoma. Pulled the bike out of the back and my friend rode to the nearest town to get help. Then on another incidence we had a small flatbed that we had a motorcycle on and on the trip back we blew an axle and the wheel flew off into lala land never to be seen again. Uhaul had us waiting for 3 hours for help when we finally left it there. Had a dolly to tow a car on across town, 5 minutes from the dealer, something on it broke leaving pieces on the road. When we took it back, the manager at the uhaul told us The don't call it adventures in moving for nothing. and that was the last time we ever used them! ~ Lisa ~ Do you Rigminder? The price I got from PODS was not what I would call cheap. They were damn near the same price to hire somebody to move it. It maybe a local guy to come load your stuff but then they take it to the compnay who is going to haul it cross country. Kinda sneaky but I understand why those big movers do it. That's not really uncommon and while it may be a technique that scammers use, it certainly doesn't imply that there are definitely bad business practices. I've done a cross-country move (paid for by my employer) that worked that way: local company that contracts with a national mover (in this case Mayflower) did the packing/loading on one end (NC) and another local company did the unloading on the other end (Seattle). For the most part it was a good experience, though I found the company in Seattle did try to nickel-and-dime me for stuff I thought was included. Lesson learned: be very clear about what's included and what isn't. When I moved from Seattle to LA and back, I used the same company both times. They were a company that had local offices on both ends of my move Angeles) and they contracted with a national company (Atlas) to do the actual hauling. I liked that approach better because I had the same company to deal with on both ends if there were any problems. Just pointing out that the "local guy who hands the stuff off to a national carrier" is not "sneaky" ... it's common business practice for reputable names in the industry. Just make sure that you understand all the business relationships and who is responsible for what and how your goods will be handled and what's included and what isn't. Oh, and for my last move across town, I did my own packing and hired a small local company to do the loading/unloading/hauling. I decided at a certain point (around 30, I think) that I and all my friends all had good jobs and we were grownups and could afford to hire movers. I stopped asking people to help me move and I stopped helping people move."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. O'Rourke
