Honesty is crucial, but as long as you have that, friends with benefits can work quite well. I don't think I've had a bad experience with one yet. Yeah, the safe sex part is important too, I just kinda consider that a given. The honesty part can be kinda tough to stick with if romantic feelings blossom, inside OR outside of the friendship, but it's crucial.
