GTAVercetti 0 #1 September 1, 2006 My uncle found this story about horse abuse. My father, who trains thoroughbred, has always found good homes for his older horses. He does not sell to glue factories or meat packers. A year or so ago, my dad had the pleasure of meeting Paul Sorvino and giving him some horses. Paul and his daughter have organization that helps rescue dogs. After my dad told them about how old horses are often treated, they set up a similar organization for horses. I think it is a very cool thing they do. Even if they do call my dad's profession, "a sport of death." http://www.longislandpress.com/index.php?show=article&cp=239&a_id=9572 My dad's name is Bob Kotenko. I realize the SC potential of this article, but I am just posting it to show that I am proud of my dad. He tries to do the right thing, in an industry where so many just look at horses as money-makers.Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing. GTAVercetti 0 #3 September 1, 2006 QuoteWhile I am royally against racing any animal; I'm happy your dad is involved in finding the retired racers good homes. I can understand your position. But you would probably be suprised by how much thoroughbreds actually WANT to run. It is a shame that too many people in the industry have no compassion for the animals that are their livelihood. I am just glad my dad is not one of them. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

PLFXpert 0 #9 September 1, 2006 Unfortunately animals rights activists and the like get a bad rap for being extreme or cult-like. I find standing on my soap box and screaming will effectively go in one ear and out the other with most people who find ignorance is bliss (and it is.). Thus, I try to find sneakier, more subtle ways of getting the message across; in addition to doing my share of donating, volunteering and writing numerous letters. Thanks. I am suprised we have yet to come up with a good gelatin substitute. Or have we and I don't know about it? PLFXpert. I should have said RACE, not run. You should see the way a horse gets when they know it is race. You don't see the same reaction when they are put out to pasture where they can just run all they want (just for a break, not because the horse is old). Horseracing will most likely not stop. That being the case, it is one area where I think MORE regulation, not less, should be required. Some of the people involved are downright despicable and get away with ALOT of stuff that is just wrong. I think this thread may head to that "other" place. Why yes, my license number is a palindrome. Thank you for noticing.

Lindercles 0 #13 September 1, 2006 There are several gelatin substitutes out there. Why they're not used more often I don't know, but I'd guess they're more expensive to produce. These days it's more and more common to find "gummy" products that don't have gelatin in them, and it's worth reading the labels to find out.

PLFXpert 0 #15 September 1, 2006 I believe I have touched a couple hearts and minds. I know of two very close to me individuals that have dramtically changed their ways and their awareness. Like the man and the starfish--"I made a difference to that one."Rob, I respectfully disagree with the sport (and not necessarily the "race" itself). Also, out of respect for Roberto and Father Kotenko (I love that name!), I'd like to see another thread started (perhaps in SC?) if anyone would like to discuss the sport or any other animal welfare issue further.
