Ok,

So I'm bored at work and a little cranky from having to wake up early and then I get to read more "stupid skydiver shit"!

I wont get into the most recent thread I just finished reading "though I'm sure you can figure it out", but here is my WTF question.

How come it seems like only the "CONSERVATIVE" jumpers are the ones in the incident forum. Every fucking time I see something bad happen in this great sport, the first damn phrase is "they were very conservative jumpers, blah blah blah".

Wouldnt one think that if these people were so conservative they probably wouldn't have ended in that forum?

Its a natural reaction a lot of jumpers have who knew the person in the incident, its almost like they are protecting them.

2) Bad things can happen to anyone, regardless of their degree of aggressiveness or conservatism.

Conservative jumpers are the ones that seem to get it landing off the DZ, making a last second hard turn to avoid an obstacle. Maybe flying too small of a canopy to start with, they had always flown it gingerly in the pattern, not really knowing what to do in a tight spot. I know this is a generalization, but so is your initial observation. And I do know of many incidents that fit my template.

The not conservative ones hook it in in front of everyone, usually after a few close calls. These are usually younger people who downsize but say they'll be careful for the next 300 jumps.

If this sounds cold, it's because I've had to fill out the paperwork after the dust settles. It sucks.

My point exactly. Except when people that know these individuals that hooked it in front of everyone, you get the "I dont know what could have happened, they were such safe, conservative jumpers".

Now I know this is a generalazation and doesnt include everyone that goes in (or even a majority).

Its just, if these people were such safe/conservative jumpers, as they are being described....then why did they ever end up in the position that killed them?

Its just, if these people were such safe/conservative jumpers, as they are being described....then why did they ever end up in the position that killed them?

Maybe because a lot of incidents involve people who really ARE head-up jumpers. That's the part that gets people....thinking that if ya' don't do anything radical, skydiving can be safe. Maybe safer, but certainly not safe.
