froggy-femme 0 #1 May 8, 2007 Hello! I am a new skydiver and I have been jumping at a dropzone for one year now. As I now realize that I'm hooked, I need to find a way to feed myself with all the jumping I would love to do. People at my DZ have found out that I am a seamstress and are asking me to do repairs and additions on their jumpsuits. I'm having a hard time figuring out what to charge. I figured people in these forums will tell me the truth. I've done a bit of reasearch, but the info I've found has been master riggers doing the work and charging $60/hr. plus materials! I'm wondering what a fair price would be for things like... -zipper replacement -changing velcro -patching holes -fixing booties -adding pockets Im trying to get a jumpsuit business going but the repair thing seems more consistant right now. I love to sew but it can get a little boring sitting in a trailer all day changing zippers, so I have to see if it's worth it. Any help would be much appreciated. Blue Skies! PhreeZone 20 #3 May 8, 2007 Gary, it seems that you don't do any repair work on canopies. If you want to charge $5 a patch I'm sure all the manufactors will outsource all their repair work to you since it'll be far cheaper for them. Canopy patches depend on a lot of factors, how much stitching needs unpicked to get to the damaged area, is rib work involved, any extra considerations like reenforcement tapes that need replaced, special bartack machines needed, etc. Then there is the factor of having to keep on hand the ZP material to do the repairs or the cost to special order in a piece that matches. Its easy to find that labor and materials on even "easy" patches runs $20-25 and gets up to the $200 range to replace a cell.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
DeNReN 0 #4 May 8, 2007 Phree....she does jumpsuit repairs...Edited to add: to the OP...forget $60 a hour...decide what you want to charge for a basic patch...bootie repair...etc.....ie: $5.00 small to med patch...$10 large patch....reconstruct ass of a jumpsuit and replace with cordura..$25 per cheek Be fair but dont sell your skills short...and dont forget to barter for coached jumps etc.. bigway 4 #5 May 8, 2007 Eric, It seems you did not read the thread correctly. If manufacturers were to send their canopies to people who repair jumpsuits i think we would all be screwed. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .
riggergreg 0 #6 May 10, 2007 I charge $30 bucks an hour. A simple patch takes 15 mins,=$10 On the leg where it's harder to get to might take longer=$15-$20 Seams and major repairs take even longer. Charge accordingly Set a rate and stick to it.
