Photoshop folks, help!

Recommended Posts

i'm a photoshop dummy. I keep seeing shots that have a single aspect colorized, while the rest is either high key or B/W. I haven't been able to find a step by step tutorial which will allow me to re-create that effect, and I have at least three shots from the shoot I did on Sunday I'd love to see how it works with just her eyes remaining colorized.

Can anyone either tell me how to do that, or point me to the best, easiest tutorial for this? I can't afford to buy any plug-ins, and I know all I'm missing is one simple step...but I'm lost and asking for help.

Thanks in advance!

are you talking about something like this?

if so there is a tutorial here http://www.gimpguru.org/Tutorials/SelectiveColorization/ for doing it in the Gimp... I imagine the process is the same in photoshop.

Oh and I often "tone" my B&W photos with the color swatches here http://www.gimpguru.org/Tutorials/SampleToning/

like the lighthouse photo on my website: http://www.scottgunshell.com/Lighthouse8x10-Signs-plat01-upload.JPG

I hope this is what you're thinking of and if it helps...

Michele - look here. You will need to subscribe to see it, but the tutorial link has a section of how to bring the eyes out. Making the rest of the photo Black and white is easy.

These forums also have a room called "RAW and post processing" where you can ask any question you like.

Hope that helps!!

This is easy.

You need a newer version af Adobe photoshop, or Adobe Photoshop Elements, and the recipe goes like this:

select the areas that you want in B/W. You can use any selection tool for this, I mostly use the magic wand, but for round objects, like irises it is better to use something more precice, like the elliptical marquee tool. If you are going to leave color on only small parts of the picture, you can select the areas you want to leave color on, and then inverse the selection (select-->inverse). Don't worry of you don't get it completely accurate, we will come to that.

Close to the bottom of your photoshop toolbox, you will find a small icon that you can click to "enter quick mask mode". Click it, and the unselected parts of your picture will be covered with a red, semi-transparent color. You can now use the paintbrush tool or any painting tool of your choice to edit the selection. Soft paintbrush the right size usually gives the best results. Use patience, and experiment. When you are done, click the "edit in standard mode" icon to go back to normal seletion.

For easier selections, it can be enough to skip the quick mask step, and just feather the selection a little (select-->feather).

Now, make e new hue/saturation adjustment layer (layer-->new adjustment layer-->hue/saturation) Push the saturation slider to -100.

Chose select-->deselect when you are done.

If you want to make more changes later, you can always double click on the adjustment layer later and push the sliders, without having to make the selection again, because the selection is saved along with the layer.

When you edit photos in photoshop or any other cool image editing tool, don't overdo it, sometimes the subtle effects look best. But, by all means, play and experiment, you only use disk space. Being able to select in photoshop opens up many fun possibilities. Try to move the saturation slider the other way and see what happens.

Hope this was of any help

can't understand why this forum points to aerodyne icon when I write "icon". I meant the little picture-button thin in a computer program, not the rig, but I am sure you understand what I mean.

PinkFairy, I think that's what I'm trying to do. The whole inverse thingy gets me confused...but your recipe seems to be easier than others I've looked at. I'll give it a go, when I have some time, and see if that's what I'm looking for.

Thanks a ton...

Stumpy, I love that place. Been a member there for over a year, but utterly forgot it as a resource. Back into my favorite it goes, thanks!

Icon (and what the hell is that trick??? Hey, if you're going to hijack my thread, the least you can do is share that secret...), I like the treatment you've done on both of the shots, but no, that effect isn't what I'm after. Thanks for the help, though...it will come in handy when I'm looking to try that, too.

Convert the entire image to B&W . Select the history brush . Back up a step in the history/actions box and then click on the little box that is next to the bar where you converted to B&W on the left. Now go back and paint the area you want B&W and you are done . You do not need to waste time with the eliptical tool or selecting parts of the image , just do it this way and it is fast .

Are you talking about doing something like the photo I have attached?

If you are it is really easy.

Open the picture in photoshop. Go to layer -> new adjustment layer -> hue/saturation

Set your saturation to -100.

click ok

when you have done that, look in your layer list, there should be a new layer that has to Boxes in it. (See attachment 2)

Use the paintbrush and eraser to desired effect. Its pretty easy. Just make sure you are painting on the mask layer.
