Settle a bet: are USED Star Wars toys worth anything?

Recommended Posts

I have a garbage bag (yes, a garbage bag) full of the Star Wars toys I played with when I was a kid just sitting in my spare room. Millenium Falcon, Tie Fighter, X-Wing, a bunch of other vehicles, and enough action figures to choke an army of family pets.

These are the toys that I abused mercilessly when I was kneehigh to a grasshopper. My cousins then inherited and also abused the same gear. We're talking seriously used gear, here.

My family (parents, aunts, uncles) swear this stuff is worth MAJOR ching if I sell it. I contend that being HEAVILY used, and the fact that the boxes for this stuff are now twenty years deep in the Erie, Pennsylvania landfill, that the toys and figures are worth shit on the market.

So waddaya think? Lemme know, meanwhile I'm gonna put the wings on the Tie-Fighter and run around the house "eeeeerrrrrrr.... pow! pow! Zap! Zing! LUKE! I'm your father!" and see if I can scare the cats into cardiac arrest. I don't think that one little red light and that sick little buzzer that sounds when you push the trigger will do much to them though...

I'm not sure. I know they are worth something if your have the original box and that they are all in working order, ie no missing peieces, not broke, etc.

I have a ton of that stuff too up in my attic and if I was every strapped for cash I would attempt to sell it. I have all the boxes though and never "abused" the items. Check out Ebay, I know they have that stuff for sale.

I sold some of my star wars stuff on ebay not long ago and got some descent money for them. However they were not seriously abused, some did have broken parts though.
Millenium falcon in good condition is probably worth a good amount, but not like thousands. Do a quick search on ebay for things and you will see how much they sell for. I had an at-at that I sold that was in pretty good condition, missing chin guns, didn't make noise anymore, stickers coming off a little, that I think I only got like 65 or 75 for. Others got between what I got and up to 150.
I thought they would be worth more as well, but apparently you play with it and people(collectors) don't like that. :S

If they are seriously used, they are only worth a couple of bucks at a garage sale, IMO, from what I have seen of other Star Wars toys.

True Story: I had WELL PRESERVED Star Wars figures from the 70's in the Darth Vader bust people carrier that I was hoping to pass to my little boy. They were in cherry condition (I was a bit OCD as a kid, go figure). Well, my mom decided to give -GIVE THEM- to my cousin, a teenager, who sold them FOR DRUGS! ARG!!! I was so pissed. I'm STILL pissed!!!

Holy crap I'd be pissed still too.

Like the time my mom threw away the ATARI.

Hey mom where is the ATARI? "I threw it away, how old is that thing anyway?"

One more parent fuck up... my wife had a pony growing up... it was HER pet. she had it for years. she cared for it, cleaned up after it, etc. well, into high school, she didn't ride it much anymore, but she still cared for it and fed it every day. remember it was HER pet. well, her parents got rid of it W/O telling her! their rationale? "We didn't see you riding Dutchess anymore, so we got rid of her."

Oh.
My.
God.

No consultation, no communication. A pet she had for years. She was very attached to it. Then she comes home from school one day and poof, Dutchess was gone.

Fuckers.

My mom gave away our old Apple IIE. It was the moster of its time: color monitor, mouse, joystick, double disk drive, dot matrix printer, and (if you can believe it) 512K of RAM.

I told her if she held onto it a bit longer she'd be able to donate it to the Smithsonian, it was in such good shape. But nope, she put it out on the curb with the rest of the garbage.

...damn thing was snatched up by some passerby ten minutes later, she told me. To which my reply was "SEE WHAT I MEAN!"

My ex-husband used to be a partner in a store that sold Star Wars memorabilia. Some of the rarer pieces are worth something (nothing to retire on) even in used condition. Others are just fillers, and will do more good donated to some kid who will continue to play with them.

If there's a store in town that deals in that kind of stuff, just bring the whole bag and talk to him about it. If not, PM me and I can hook you up with someone in Houston.

I got you beat! I learned on a Radio Shack TRS-80 computer from 1978 or so... and my parents still have it in the original box in the basement!!! :S :D

For what it's worth, I also keep an old Mac SE-30 computer (with the 9" screen, disk drive and CPU all-in-one unit) in my attic. I might get it out and see if it still runs. :P

My dad's mom tossed out his entire baseball card collection and his comic book collection (mind you my dad was born in 1940) when he got out of college and was in the Air Force. He's still mad about that, even though she has long since passed on.

Moral of the story is that my cards and comics are safe at my parents house in a box at the bottom of a closet, in the dark corner all sealed away properly in expensive acid free bags. Dad came through town about a week ago and I even asked, "did yall throw away my comics and such?" "Nope, won't do that." "Good, I'll be sure to get them next time I'm up there."

I have a story a bit like that.

When I was eight years old, I found an owl that had fallen out of it's nest. I climbed the tree and put it back. The next morning it was on the ground again. I took it home, and my parents drove me to a sanctuary. They said "Ring it's neck."

Well, I took it home, and my dad said give it raw egg. I went to the library and read all I could, and ended up chewing small bits of steak and feeding it to the owl. Who grew bigger. And bigger.

We had racing pidgeons at one stage, and their coop was still there, so she went in there. I spent up to 8 hours a day with that bird, and against expectation trained it for falconry and flew it against squirrels and oddly enough, frogs. At 18 I was drafted to the military, but my parents kept feeding it after they had tried to let it go but it just sat there. For days.

When I was 20 I had moved out of the house, but came round on weekends and visited.

When I was 30, my parents said they were selling the house. This owl and I had been together 22 years, so I set up my house to let her stay. My parents said that a "Nice German couple" had bought the house, but "loved" the owl and wanted it - or no sale...

I met them, and they said "Ja!" a lot, but seemed "nice." They also said I could come round whenever to visit. (The coop was big, about 200 m from the house, so there were no uncomfortable "people" issues.) I taught them all they needed to know. Feed once a day. 1 day something with bone. Chicken necks are good. One day something with fur or feathers. Water only once a week. (Owls get all their moisture from their food.)

A month later the owl was dead. They'd fed it spicy sausage. It didn't want to eat it, so they made it. It had scratched them and died soon after that.

Fuckers. I never spoke to my parents for over a year after that.
