skymama 37 #1 September 7, 2006 Anyone ever have one of these done? The doc is sending my 15 year old son to get one next week. He had his sports physical this week and they said he hasn't grown in the past year. That was a big surprise to me because I could have sworn he got taller than me. I think I'm shrinking! It's a bit of a shock, all the males in his immediate families are all 6'2" or taller and he's houvering at 5'6 3/4" right now. If he's not going to be tall, I guess it's a good thing he's athletic, smart and good-looking.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
BillyVance 35 #2 September 7, 2006 Quote I think I'm shrinking! . It's possible... My dad was 5'-6" in his prime. He's now 5'-1" or so but he's 70 now... I have a cousin who was 5'-10" and then hit a growth spurt in his senior year in high school, 6 inches in 7 months. Spent some time in the hospital for it too since his lungs collapsed. Now he's a movie star-ish 6'-4"."Mediocre people don't like high achievers, and high achievers don't like mediocre people." - SIX TIME National Champion coach Nick Saban
mailin 0 #3 September 7, 2006 Hi Andrea, My brother had one of those at the same age also. My father is 6'2", his brother 6'0" and his father was 6'1". At 16 years old my brother hovered at 5'6" (shorter than me ) and hadn't grown more than 1/4" from 14 - 16. He hit a growth spurt at 17 (very late!) and got up to 5'10" or so, and thats where he will stay. My mother is about 5'5", so its a good 'medium range' I guess. I don't recall him saying much about the study, other than it requiring alot of X-rays. QuoteIf he's not going to be tall, I guess it's a good thing he's athletic, smart and good-looking. We can't have everything now, can we Hope you get good news! JenArianna Frances
skymama 37 #4 September 7, 2006 I know he wants to at least get to 6', but it's nice to know that slowing down like this might be pretty normal. She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
mailin 0 #5 September 7, 2006 Its different for alot of people. My husband is 6'4" and he had pretty steady growth from 13 - 17, with no real 'growth spurts'. My brother on the other hand, most definitely not. If geneticly there are tall people in your family, chances are you'll have height on your side. My mother's family was never tall - both of her brother (twins) are only about 5'6" or 5'7", yet my father's family is full of tall (over 5'11") men. Its not fun being short - my brother was heavy until he went through his growth spurt and he was really made fun of. Thankfully its sounds like your son is pretty well proportion. My brother also has real bad asthma (and smokes, the fool ) and they said the steroids he had to take for his asthma could have stunted his growth - but I don't think your son is in the same category. My brother had been on them since he was 2. JenArianna Frances
simplyputsi 0 #6 September 7, 2006 I think they can just xray his ankles since you have a growth plate there that determines how tall you will be pretty much. Well that is what I was told when I broke mine. They said well you only have about 2 more inches to grow. I was like oh gee thanks for the info. edit OMG i used their instead of there, i'm so ashamedSkymama's #2 stalker -
jumpingbean001 0 #7 September 7, 2006 Girl, you should have asked me. This is my area. For a Bone age study at Shands we used to just do one hand xray. Though there could be other factors involved or an inquisitive doc/rad who would like additional parts xrayed. Def nothing to worry about and not a complicated exam. Whatever gets xrayed, they pull out some books as guides and try to determine the growth rate. I had an interesting dude the other night whose plates had not fused and he was in his 20s. He looked freakin 13! I had to ask for his id! I am not sure what syndrome he had, but dude may look 20 when he is 50 and that is NOT a bad thing!!Let's have fun! :)
skymama 37 #8 September 7, 2006 So, if he still has growing room, that means his plates have not fused yet?She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon

I'm confused. If your not done growing why would you still look young even though you are old?? Hormones I guess. And I don't think that is true anyway. I look young for my age, always have, but I was all fused up years ago.Skymama's #2 stalker -

Snowwhite 0 #13 September 8, 2006 Too cool. I'd love to carry on a long conversation with you sometime. My second son has OI IV, and he went thru one of those huge growth spurts too. He's currently about 6'2" although I am sure he will start shrinking as soon as his spine starts collapsing.skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com
jumpingbean001 0 #14 September 8, 2006 OI? Osteogenesis Imperfecta?? I did some research on that...not a nice disorder. Let's have fun! :)
jumpingbean001 0 #15 September 8, 2006 QuoteSo, if he still has growing room, that means his plates have not fused yet? Well when the growth plates are fused, it is usually a sign that we are done growing....physically anyway.Let's have fun! :)

jumpingbean001 0 #17 September 8, 2006 I work with a family that has it and they are doing fine. If you can make it through your early years, life gets better. They come in occassionally for a broken bone from simple tasks. Guy broke his femur while propping a box on his leg from back of truck. It depends on how bad it is. Some kids get pelvic fractures while mom changes their diapers. Some do not make it past the age of 3. Just depends. There are prob things they can do now to help strengthen the bones.Let's have fun! :)
Snowwhite 0 #18 September 8, 2006 JP broke three fingers while putting his hand in his pocket. Broke his ankle stepping off a curb. Broke ribs rolling over in bed. He's been on calcium supplements and has eaten more cheese than they have in France. He drinks a gallon of milk a day. Seems to be doing a little better. Hasn't broken anything for several years. *KNOCK ON WOOD*skydiveTaylorville.org freefallbeth@yahoo.com

steveorino 7 #20 September 8, 2006 My middle son, Drew, was always the little guy. We thought he'd take after my father-in-law who was a slightly built 5'7" man. Somewhere around his senior year Drew sprung up to 6'1". Now he is 23 years old and is in Special Forces. In my eyes, he is a stud! steveOrino
