Elisha 1 #1 September 13, 2006 Yes, this happened....a few years ago at some Mexican place in Tiburon, CA called Guaymas. Has anyone ever heard of this? We all ordered a round of Patron Silver shots and they gave us tomato juice in those Kamikaze larger shot glasses instead of lime wedge. I was thinking, WTF? This can't have originated at this restaurant. I thought someone told me once-upon-a-time that they heard of it happening in Oaxaca. I want to settle this mystery! I tried googling Patron Silver Tomato and it didn't really help.

napalmboy 0 #5 September 14, 2006 Yup! When I was learning bartending, we called it "The Sangrita." Shot of tequila, shot of chilled tomato juice, add a bit of lemon juice and pepper to the tomato juice. It's supposed to be gold tequila, rather than silver, but I guess it could work either way. Also, the tomato juice really isn't a chaser; you're supposed to sip each alternatively. They actually work really well together.Well, the door was open... 2fat2fly 0 #6 September 14, 2006 I was hanging in a Holiday Inn bar in WI a couple of years ago with some Kentucky iron workers and we did what they called "red rooster" shots. Line up 3 shot glasses, first sweet/sour mix, second tequila, third tomato juice-hit them one, two three. They started getting pretty good later in the night.I am not the man. tigra 0 #9 September 14, 2006 A few years back, on a trip to Ixtapa with my girlfriends, we were in a fairly nice restaurant and ordered tequila. When we did the tequila as shots, the waiter was appalled and gave us a lecture on the proper way to drink fine tequila- which includes sipping it (instead of slamming it) and alternating with the tomato juice concoction, which he called Sangrita or something similar. TheAnvil 0 #10 September 14, 2006 Ahhhhhhh! Why would anyone desecrate good tequila with tomato juice? Perhaps this is some trick to make Cuervo 1800 or other inferior tequilas palatable. Actually, Cuervo 1800 is actually good as a cooking tequila. The mere thought of anyone drinking tomato juice with Patron, Cabo Wabo, Herradura, Don Julio, Corazon, Tres Generaciones, Hussongs, Conquistador, Gran Centenario, El Jimador, or any other good tequila is just unthinkable to me. Perhaps it's good for some people, but not for me. Vinny the Anvil Post Traumatic Didn't Make The Lakers Syndrome is REAL JACKASS POWER!!!!!!
jeannajumps 0 #11 September 14, 2006 Tomato juice sounds nasty! But not nearly as much as dill pickles. We were out of limes, but there was a big jar of dill pickles in the fridge. They're both green! It seemed like a great idea at the time, but I don't recommend it unless you want a really bad taste in your mouth.

tigra 0 #13 September 14, 2006 Its not JUST tomato juice- I don't know everything that's in it, but it is tomato based. And you've got it wrong- its for the GOOD sipping tequilas- not a chaser or a mixer, just something to go along with it. But hey- to each his own. In Europe, they have mayo with their fries. Sounded really gross to me until I tried it! But with the right kind of fries and a good high quality mayo? YUM!
brianfry713 0 #14 September 14, 2006 Who needs a chaser, enjoy the tequila. Sometimes I chase vodka or rum with tequila. For me, the tequila's the one that will hurt later though.

But, then again, I wouldn't deign to tell the Japanese how to eat sushi either. Unless you're a college kid on spring break or a clueless tourist, the "Mexican" way of enjoying a good tequila is typically with two glasses: one for the reposado tequila and the other is for the sangrita (tomato juice/clam juice/OJ/lime juice--sometimes with tabasco, pepper, salt, grenadine, worchestershire or A1 sauce). Every so often take a bite of lime. Oh yeah...and *s-l-o-w down* [That'll make it less obvious you're a gringo/tourist]

I KNOW that I'm welcome to drink it sans salt/lime/whatever, but I just had to know WTF this tomato juice thing came from!

Beer 0 #20 September 15, 2006 I've had it before, but I thought it was Sangrit ( with the accent thingie on the "i"). It is tomato juice based like someone else said. Very good with a quality tequila. Excelent with Tres Generaciones. Any tequila not wort sipping isn't worth drinking. Not that I haven't consumed half a dozen double shots of quervo in a row.
