wmw999 2,588 #1 September 14, 2006 I'm going to be in San Francisco for a couple of days (run-up to a conference in San Jose), and am looking at a hotel that's about 20 minutes from Fisherman's wharf. Not cheap, but free parking. If I like walking, is that a decent location? Anyone have any recommendations? To me, $120/night is pretty expensive. After looking, I don't think I'll do much better than that in the city, but staying in the city means I don't have to hassle with parking etc. Izzat so, or is there a better option. I await the collective wisdom with bated breath... Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. NWFlyer 2 #2 September 14, 2006 IIRC the boat ride out to Alcatraz is about 20 minutes from Fisherman's Wharf. Does your room come with a free tour?"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. wmw999 2,588 #3 September 14, 2006 No free tour most likely. Is that 20 minutes walking or driving? And does a bus go there (or do I just suck it up, drive, and park?) thanks WendyThere is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. Sockpuppet 0 #4 September 14, 2006 Just sleep in the hanger at the local DZ and demo your way into the conference. Hey presto...no parking ------ Two of the three voices in my head agree with you. It might actually be unanimous but voice three only speaks Welsh.

wmw999 2,588 #7 September 14, 2006 Yeah, I know about the steep hills. But last year's Thanksgiving vacation was to go hike in the Andes . Something called the Francisco Inn. Lots of good reviews, decent price, noisy. On Lombard St. WendyThere is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. TheGirlWonder 0 #9 September 14, 2006 I grew up just outside of SF and its an amazing city... you'll love it! 20 minutes from Fishermans Warf doesnt say a whole lot though. Do you know specifically what district the hotel is located in? No matter what, getting around in SF is pretty easy. Great public transit if you are too far to walk. Just make sure you are not staying in a bad area and you should be fine in terms of getting around.
StreetScooby 5 #10 September 14, 2006 Quote On Lombard St. Lombard street runs west/east across SF, at the tip of the pennisula. The west side feeds from the Golden Gate bridge, traffic wise. The east side is the really curvy street that you see in Pictures. In between the two, you're close to the Marina disctrict. Either way, your "uptown". Union street has alot of really nice restaurants, plus a great blues bar that's owned by a famous Jazz player (Blue something or other). The east side of Lombard is right next to the Italian section. Again, lots of good stuff there. Just walk along the street, and suck up the vibes. We are all engines of karma

And does a bus go there (or do I just suck it up, drive, and park?) thanks Wendy That was a joke. I figured all you were gonna get for $120 a night was a cell on "The Rock." Defintely do the tour, though."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." -P.J. Lots of good reviews, decent price, noisy. On Lombard St. Wendy Hi Wendy, John here. I live just a few blocks from there and can probably see the hotel from my window right now. ;-) Yes, it's about a 20 min walk to Fishermans' Wharf, 15 to Ghiradelli Square, 10 min to all the shops on Union St. and 10 min. to an awesome park right on the bay with great views of the GG bridge. On the other hand, you'd have to walk up one mother of a hill (and then back down) to get anywhere near downtown, or take a bus. It's about 20 min by bus to Union Square, for example BUT if you have a car, you can easily drive where you'll need to go, though parking can be a bit of a pain (though not impossible) depending on what part of town you want to visit. If you need parking, I'd say $120 is a pretty good deal. Pretty much the only hotels/motels that offer parking for free in the city are over here in the Marina. Otherwise you'd pay $25-$40/night for parking at a hotel downtown. You're welcome to PM me if you'd like some more specific advice on what to do and where to go while you're in SF. It's always fun to meet a fellow dropzone.commer, so I'd be happy to at least give you a tour of the neighborhood. Will you be visiting any of the local DZs while you're here?
