fcajump 164 #1 April 26, 2007 Ok, so I'm sure others have thought of this, but hadn't seen it go by before... My Cypres 1 turns into a pumpkin on June 30th this year. Already have plans to replace it, but what to do with the old unit...? Well, also sitting around are: retired (very functional) rig retired (airworthy, but ragged out) main soon to be pumkin Cypres retired but airworthy reserve (LoPo26) inflatable PFD Hmmm.... WATER JUMP!!! Yes, I have and will jump without an AAD, but choose not to. And since this thing will be NA on July 1, seems like no loss. Now I just need to assemble the rig and figure out where to arrange for this... Anyone else in WDC or NortherVA interested, qualified, and have gear ready? Would be cheeper to share the load... councilman24 37 #2 April 26, 2007 We used to make water jumps fairly routinely when we had more gutter gear laying around. But, I've seen lots of them go not so good. One guy using a round main and a chest mount reserve with an iffy ripcord pocket and 550 cord tie down had to use the chest mount. I saw a whole Beech 18 load mis the lake due to a bad spot. Lots of rounds and bare feet on the load. And all sorts of stuff like that. Make sure you'd jump the rig anyway, that your'll willing to land on land with it, that you have PFD even if you don't inflate it, that the boat driver knows whats he's doing, and all the rest of the training. But, they are fun. I certainly have at least one rig I'd take into the water, probably three. And since usually you want to land in the lake near the shore but in the water spotting shouldn't be ignored and hop and pops are best. You sure you need to drown the cypres? Might be more fun and educational to newbies to throw it out and let it fire. Or put it on the main, set it high and let it deploy for you. See rigger, S&TA, and DZO before trying this at home! All good advice Terry... (fortunately I saw my rigger this morning in the mirror, and he said it was a great idea) As the ragged out rig has an almost new harness, no problem there. The biggest thing to convince myself is going to be on the condition of the reserve canopy... but it will be TSO-worthy, or it won't be in the rig. Boat/driver I need. Safety diver/swimmer I have and he has both the jumping and diving experience. Location... I'm working on. Unfortunately the last time my old DZ went gutter-diving into the Potomac, I was sick. Then they started with the "in the pool and we'll throw it over you" routine... so while I have the training by the book, I want the real thing!! peregrinerose 0 #4 April 26, 2007 Call up to Maytown... they do water jumps into the Susquehanna every year. Do or do not, there is no try -Yoda
diablopilot 2 #5 April 26, 2007 Well since you won't be packing your Pumkin Cypres into the rig, you can consider using it for the trade in value. ($80 I think), or selling it to me. ---------------------------------------------- You're not as good as you think you are. Seriously.
Spizzzarko 0 #6 April 26, 2007 How about instead of ruining the cypress why don't you send it to me so we can use it to test firing speeds in hook turns! There are many of us who are interested in trying this but we need the cypress hardware. If you are interested in helping out our cause then PM me and I will give you more information. dorbie 0 #7 April 26, 2007 If your new AAD is a cypres 2 you can make a water jump with it anyway. So you can still do something else fun with your old one.
ZigZagMarquis 9 #8 April 27, 2007 I have a Cypres that drops dead in Oct 08. Fact of fiction, I've heard said that a Cypres cutter will cut a piece of 3/32 stainless steel aircraft control cable (pretty much the same stuff your reserve rip cord is made of). Like I said, I wonder (doubt) whether or not that claim is true, but I've been mulling over "finding out" wiht my Cypres that's dead here in a bit over a year. I dun seen the photomagraphs. And if you see it in a picture, it MUST be true!! Well, these good folks have pretty much talked me into waiting for my C2, not drenching the old C1 and finding a better use for the outdated. If I am waiting until the C2, then maybe I'll take up the offer to come to Maytown. Does DDWolf swim? (He's likely one of the few that I would trust to hand me gutter gear, come to think of it..., though I will likely still get my old rig out for it...) ZigZagMarquis 9 #10 April 27, 2007 On the topic of water jumps... A buddy of mine still tells the story from "back in the day" when y'all had to do a no-shit water jump to get your D-License, they used to jump gutt-gear into the big water hazard (lake) at the California City golf course. Well, my buddy can't swim, but he really wanted his D-License, so he did it anyway. His plan was to land as close to the boat as possible. When he tells the story, he goes on to say he almost drown after landing in the water until he realized that everyone on shore and in the boat was yelling, "DAVE! JUST STAND UP!!"... which he finally did... then realizing that the water hazard was only slightly more then waist deep.

JerryBaumchen 1,466 #13 April 27, 2007 Hi Zig, Back in about '94 I was in L.A. on business and had some free time one afternoon. Stopped by FXC and asked about how their work on an electronic AAD was coming along. I met with three different people (don't remember who now) and they showed me some prototypes. They said that they had cut a ripcord cable (3/32" 7x7 strand) with it. Jerry
