I have just about all of mine, going back to the early 90's. However, the IRS generally suggest that you only keep the last 7 years of tax returns, and then dispose of anything older via shredder or fire.
My parents... good god man, my brother and I were cleaning their basement last year, and I found boxes of financial records going back more than 40 years! Kept every damn thing...

The only way we are getting rid of that shit is when they croak.

I never really made enough money to care until about 3 years ago. When I made 50K or less I figured I had a better chance of winning the lotto than being audited. Now..........I would be an idiot to NOT keep copies, supporting documents, and have my accountant on speed dial.
Working overseas is a TAX HEADACHE!

QuoteHi, I'm the IRS man an I'm here to help you, can you explain what kind of payment you recieve under the table.
I plead the 5th!

If you find yourself in a fair fight, your tactics suck!
I think I've got 10 years worth or so. Need to go and shred some of them. Figure 7 years worth of them is good enough since that's all the IRS says to keep.

All of them (about 35), except last year's, which has not yet been completed. A decade ago I started to throw out the first 10 years, but those are so thin that storing them takes no space at all. After purging instructions and such from the older years, it all fits a one file drawer.
I know I can win the award hands down.
They are in a big old chest freezer that quit working down in my basement. It is sort of neat to be able to go look up what they paid for something back in 1946 or to be able to find a receipt for a tractor that was bought in the 1950's

It must be very organized. So... what did a tractor cost in the 1950s? And to put it in perspective, what would it cost today?
