phoenixlpr 0 #2 April 24, 2007 Quote What happens when a line-set is retrimmed? Are lines legthened or only shortened? You are the first I've heard this term. All I know is replacing the old line-set with a new one.
slotperfect 7 #3 April 24, 2007 The original line set is manufactured and installed with very specific lengths and tolerances, appropriate to each line group (a/b/c/d/steering), ideally applied to that particular canopy through design and testing. Through normal use a lineset not only wears, but those specific line lengths can fall outside the manufacturers tolerance. Most times that happens unevenly (happens to some lines and not others). This can significantly affect the way the canopy opens, flies, and lands. When you replace a linestet on a canopy, it brings it back to the original manufacturers specifications and tolerances. It will then virtually fly like new - vaguely similar to putting four new tires on your car and having it aligned.Arrive Safely John
riggerrob 643 #4 April 24, 2007 It depends upon what type of suspension lines you have. Dacron lines tend to stretch out of trim, so the steering and center lines stretch much longer than the other lines. The cure is to shorten the worst lines. Spectra suspension lines have the opposite problem. Corner lines tend to shrink out of trim. As the slider races down the lines, it rubs against them creating friction and heat. The damage occurrs when the slider grommets press some of that heat into the bottom of the lines. Spectra steering lines shrink even faster because they get rubbed up and down through the slider grommets and steering guide rings repeatedly during canopy flight. I have only retrimmed a few Strong SET400 tandem canopies (Spectra suspension lines) - starting this year - and that is only because my boss is too broke (something about a long and wet winter) to buy new line kits. Re-trimming is generally limited to lengthening the outboard A and D lines along with the steering lines. It is almost as labour-intensive as installing a new line kit, but does save a few hundred dollars over buying a new complete line kit.
udder 0 #5 April 25, 2007 Yeah it my outboard A lines that are about 2 to 3 inches shorter than the inside ones. opening in the last 30 jumps have become progressively quicker, with not even a slightest hint of snivel(300 ft maybe? ). And if anyone mentions packing, its been packed by 2 riggers, 2 AFF instructors and a packer. All with the same results. (At least its consistent...) Its a spectra line-set on their now. Only trouble is they want a month to send me a new lineset..."In one way or the other, I'm a bad brother. Word to the motherf**ker." Eazy-E
Grumpy 9 #6 April 25, 2007 In the case of the Crossfire 1 recall & re-trim, I understand the b-lines were shortened to flatten it's glide angle and make it more resistant to collapse in turbulence.

riggerrob 643 #8 April 25, 2007 Re-trimming involves removing the stitching, re-doing finger-traps and re-sewing suspension lines. Done properly, re-trimming costs nothing in terms of materials, but is labor-intensive.
