Se7en and Their Genre

Recommended Posts

So Se7en is one of my favorite movies. It's so atypical in so many ways. For example, no real chase scenes, no big shoot'em outs, you never even see the killer until he turns himself in (turns himself IN! except for when they find his apartment, and even then you don't "see" him), has a very unexpected ending, and is just chalk full of psychological thrill and trauma. You don't see the real "violence" of the murders, only the aftermath. It's all pretty much implied. IMO, that makes it that much more compelling as a movie.

My question is this: What other movies fit this sort of pattern? They don't have to be thrillers or gorey. The Usual Suspects comes to mind somewhat, as does The Life of David Gale. Any coincidence that Kevin Spacy is in them all?

So, give me a list... what are your flicks that were SO compelling, SO fascinating, SO unexpected that you left the theatre and just sat in your car and went... "WHOA." That's what my wife and I did after we saw Se7en when it came out. We felt like we had been mentally raped. And there is something about that kind of movie that just fascinates me.

You mean The Life of David Gale?

I'm leaving work in about 2 minutes, but the first one to spring to mind is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Mulholland Drive. The first time I watched it, I spent the entire movie wondering what the hell I was watching, why it was so fascinating (besides the lesbian sex), and how it could be so compelling (besides being a David Lynch flick). At the end, I didn't know the story, but I did have a pretty good idea what had happened (though no clue how I knew). I couldn't sleep that night as I tossed the scenes/lines around in my head...got up at 2 AM and watched it again. Got home from work the next day and watched it again. I think it was the 4th or 5 viewing during which I could kinda sorta tell what was going on in the movie.

You usually have to look to Europe for things like that. Or small budget type things. Major studios say, "Hmmm. Weak story line. Bulk it up with some explosions and gratuitous nuddity." The US even screws up remakes of the foreign films.

For a GREAT, dark movie, watch the Dutch film "Spoorloos (The Vanishing)." It was later remade as "The Vanishing" with Jeff Bridges and Kiefer Sutherland. The utter reality of Spoorloos, and the ending, will leave you thinking. I'm telling you, Micro, rent it!

Another GREAT foreign movie was Insomnia (later remade with Al Pacino and Robin Williams). Watch the original Norwegian film. You may start out thinking it's a traditional buddy cop film. It isn't. I haven't seen the American release, but I was captivated by the original.

Eternal Sunshine is one of those films you either get or you don't. I got it but the GF didn't and its damn near impossible to try to explain it to some one else.

Quick summery - erasing all the memories of someone from your mind and the actions that are taken after they are gone. Its hard to follow at points if you don't pay attention to the subtle clues they leave on screen.

I was going to hazard an effort at a summary without giving away too much, but that's pretty much what I would have said. Especially the last sentence.

I saw The Vanishing w/ Sutherland and Bridges... liked it. Are you saying Spoorloos was better? Is it subtitled?

Wasn't too impressed w/ Pacino and Williams version of Insomnia... will look for the Norwegian version.

Thanks man!

It's subtitled. And I am saying it was MUCH better. Take out the shite that Ameican film companies put in films.

Just watch the Dutch version all the way through and you'll see huge differences. The movie is much, much better and darker.
