ChasingBlueSky 0 #31 September 27, 2006 QuoteWidescreen. There is no substitute. Even before Dagny and I purchased our 50" DLP widscreen TV I still bought widescreen format DVD's. I hate watching chopped up Pan-n-Scan 4:3 versions. 40-50 inch widescreens are for the bedroom! Go big and get a really nice HD projection.....nothing like having a 100 inch screen in your living room with the sound system to match. Watching sports, Xbox360 and movies in HD that large at home is something that just needs to be seen. Plus, it is somewhat portable - just pack it up and bring it to the house that is hosting this year's Super Bowl and you have a better setup than most bars._________________________________________ you can burn the land and boil the sea, but you can't take the sky from me.... Slowfaller 0 #32 September 27, 2006 One day.... For my small basement the 50"DLP works beautifully. Only thing I want to change down there is my sub. I think an SVS 10" would sound better than my Dayton 12". The Dayton is/was a lot cheaper though, $170 shipped from parts express. The SVS is $300-$400 I think. PLFXpert 0 #33 September 27, 2006 QuoteI mean, I've got a WHOLE SCREEN, why not use it? You can't see as much with the black bars there. Oh my gosh, I completely agree! But Billy completely disagrees and thus some movies we watch with the black bars (he insists you see more peripherally.) We have a big screen TV but it's full screen. I'd like a widescreen/flat panel/HD but as long as our TVs are still working properly I refuse to spend the money upgrading. We literally have this discussion every time we watch a DVD and have the option of "full screen" or "widescreen".Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back. PLFXpert 0 #34 September 27, 2006 QuoteThusly, they CHOP OFF part of the movie. Yup. That's Billy's argument, too. And yet how important is that extra tree on the far left side of the screen to see, I say? The black bars are far more annoying... And Muenkel....flatscreen has nothing to do w/ widescreen.Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.
pirana 0 #35 September 27, 2006 QuoteWhat's strange is when widescreen movies aren't cut, but actually compressed to full screen. 2010 : The Year We Make Contact was like it. It took me a while to figure out why everyone looked so skinny. I was browsing in one of the big electronics stores and was amazed that some of the monitors were set up to stretch or compress the picture, so the screen was full, but all the people were a little fatter or skinnier than they should be. It was very annoying to watch. I asked The Guy "Who could stand to watch that?" He said some people want the screen filled even at the cost of distortion. Strange." . . . the lust for power can be just as completely satisfied by suggesting people into loving their servitude as by flogging them and kicking them into obedience." -- Aldous Huxley
Slowfaller 0 #36 September 27, 2006 [REPLY]And yet how important is that extra tree on the far left side of the screen to see, I say?[/REPLY] If you watch the movie in the dark you won't really see the black bars anyway And you'll get to see a couple more trees, which the cinematographer wanted you to see. --"Someday you will die and somehow somethings going to steal your carbon" -MM
PLFXpert 0 #37 September 27, 2006 Bah! We do watch movies in the dark (sorry mom.) but the picture is still smaller and that doesn't make me a happy camper. Screw the cinematographer's tree. It's probably computer-generated or cardboard anyways. And frankly I just don't buy the whole "You must see my tree to really grasp the feeling of my movie creation" theory. What can I say, though? Slowfaller 0 #40 September 27, 2006 never watched Ally Mcbeal but I highly recommend Arrested Development. Portia, as well as the rest of the cast, are great. I've been kinda obsessed w/ the show ever since Ginny picked up the dvds. That show will enchant you almost as much as Mrs. Featherbottom enchants his daughter, Maeby. --"Someday you will die and somehow somethings going to steal your carbon" -MM

I think most people seem to prefer that.
 ryoder 1,590 #50 September 28, 2006 Anyone ever see the Benny Hill skit where he made fun of the various methods used to put a wide-screen format on a 4:3 TV? It was hilarious! Not only was it educational in demonstrating pan & scan and horizontal-squeezing, etc, but he also exploited the shortcomings of each method for comedic effect. A few years ago I dropped into a large home-entertainment store to take a look at the current crop of wide-screen TV's. I couldn't believe what they were doing on the display models. They were putting a football game (broadcast in 4:3) on wide-screens by cropping off the top and bottom! Who the hell wants to see a team in a huddle with all the heads and feet chopped off??? Equally stupid was the relatively recent re-release of the 1983 classic "Koyaanisqatsi". The DVD was released in wide-screen format. So what is the problem? It was filmed 23 years ago in 4:3. So how did they release a wide-screen version? You guessed it. They cropped off the top and bottom of the picture! Doh!!! I was lucky enough to find an eBay seller in Brazil who was selling an earlier limited release in the original format. The menus are in Portuguese, but the actual video is un-butchered."There are only three things of value: younger women, faster airplanes, and bigger crocodiles" - Arthur Jones.
