How did you learn how to cook?

Recommended Posts

I found it helps alot..... if you Like to Eat ;)
and having always had a great appetite, it came naturally..:)i was cooking for myself by the time i was
21 and enjoy it....Don't be afraid to try things, Make sure you shop ahead to have what you need on hand, The cost for one night out for dinner, if sensibly spent at the grocery store can pay for 3 or 4 fine meals prepared at home. Then allow the right amount of time to properly prepare things and enjoy the experience...I try to include 3 or 4 items, for each meal. main course, veggies, salad, bread or chips, or antipasto or relish tray.... something sweet and something not...

I began waay before internet recipes and almost before Tv cooks.... I do prefer, slow and easy to the craziness I see on the food network today,,, where these CHEFS are all under a Time constraint :S hahahah what the heck is that all about????...
( I guess high level restaurant kitchens have to run that way, but ) it takes the fun out of it...
I make soups, and italian dishes, salads, and stews and rely on spices alot. Years ago I baked bread, but not so much lately...My wife is a good cook and shares her know -how,,,,and then..... GUESS WHAT????? I get to start dinner, 4 or 5 nights a week. Fact is I don't mind and it's nice for her when she returns home to see the table set, and something already on the stove.....
( helps maintain 'domestic tranquility' ) ;):);)..... some specialties are veal or chicken parmesen, with sauce and mozzarella, Linguine w/ seafood or clam sauce. ( I buy a can of prepared seafood sauce, and then read the ingredient list, right there in the store and buy more of those same things. add a can or two of chopped clams, some tomato paste, add a handful of frozen uncooked shrimp, etc. paprika or other spices listed )
if you like linquine, try fettuccini !!!.
Fried chicken is a great thing to make, or cutlets or meatballs, sausage w/ peppers and onions, bacon, eggs any way you'd like !!!B|:)Salads are of an endless variety, are good for you, and be dressed as you like....
Most any combination is possible with a variety of greens, celery, cukes, tomatoes, and whatever other items you'd like added to your own personal "big salad". throw in some croutons, pretend you're at the salad buffet !!!!! shop so that your refrigerator HAS those sorta items, and then enjoy...
Sandwiches are a great stand by meal IF you have the assortment of pickles, chips, dressings etc. ready to go....to compliment a sandwich...quick and easy... Just shop for fresh rolls and cold cuts, Or stick with vegetables, cheeses, mayo or mustard... For sit down dinners, where you may get the oven going... take advantage of the heat and warm up some rolls, or potatoes
or frozen fr. fries, while a roast or chicken or other meat is cooking....
get a little aroma going in your kitchen....
you'll enjoy the results....:)

I learned by cooking, but it started with a couple of guys I used to go camping with in a frontiersmen reinactment group. Those guys could cook anything in a cast iron dutch oven or in a skillet.

From there it simply took getting into the kitchen and trying things out. Atfirst things didn't always turn out that good, once I learned what different spices would taste like when used together, and in the finished food, things started turning out pretty good.

If you don't feel confident to do something like that, think of a food that you love. Google it, get the reciepe and start from there.

I learned from none of the above, really. I was never a good cook, but I was always a great baker. Bakers and cooks usually don't mix too much because baking is so precise and you really better know what you are doing if you mss with things. So, I approached cooking the same way.

I was not a good cook. Then my wife got pregnant. I still sucked as a cook until I said, "Screw it. I'm tired." I just eyeballed it, throwing stuff in, etc. It turned out great.

My cooking improved 1000% overnight. I'm now pretty good at it - to the point where I prepared the Thanksgiving feast for 20 people last year. They thought it was great.

My mum would'nt let me leave home without all the basic skills needed to live alone,
That included, cooking a roast and vegatables, sowing, washing an ironing an the basics of how to balance a pay check,

I left home on my 16 birthday

I also enjoy cooking.
