Herb Gardens Anyone?

Recommended Posts

I started an herb garden outside this summer. Separate pots for rosemary, thyme, dill, chives and basil.

All went well this summer. Had yummy fresh herbs.

I decided to move them inside when it started getting cold a few weeks ago.

I repotted them before I moved them in (fresh soil) and now, about 2 weeks later, I have a MAJOR fruit fly infestation in my house!

Anyone have any ideas how to stop this! It's the only "live" stuff in my house so I know I'm not getting the fruit flys from another plant.

I'd really like to keep it going over the winter but if I have to deal with fruit flys, I'll just let the plants die.

I had them on a ledge on my deck all summer and I don't remember seeing any fruit flys all summer.

Spray the plants with soapy water. About 5 drops of dish soap per litre. Then rinse the plants with fresh water after a day or two.

Actually, as full of shit Cocheese normally is; this is the correct answer.

Do you have any rotting fruit on your countertop?[:/]

Chris

Nope. Thought about that too. Garbage was emptied today too. Just noticed them tonight. The only thing on my counter is a pepper mill, salt mill and a bottle of red wine.

The pots are on my deck now but they won't last out there through the winter.

I'd like to keep them but if I keep getting fruit flys, they'll be out there to die in the snow.

Googled some stuff and apparently, basil is a natural fruit fly inhibitor! I have basil ... can't figure it out.

Thank you! I'll try that!

I repotted them and thought that might take care of any "outside" problems.

Thanks for saying litre too. I know that! ;)

Going to get the pail, soap and spray bottle now!

My neighbour planted chocolate herbs in her garden. She keeps bringing them over. They smell SO yummy!

I'm going to plant them next year! She has a lemon herb too. It's a hybrid. I think it's crossed with thyme ... really nice! And it thrives in shade and my front yard faces north. I'll try it next year (apprarently it keeps the mosquitoes away!)

Chocolate herbs?? B|

tell me more, never heard of anything like that :)
Just googled and found reference to 'Mint Chocolate(Mentha x Piperita)'. That's the only thing I could find. Is that the latin name for what your friend has?

If you can think of it, PM and let me know how this works out. I had exact same problem last year...I have this great 5-tiered plant stand outside. Had all my herbs and a couple plants out there, and when the cooler weather hit I brought them in, and proceeded to go crazy trying to get rid of all the little varmets. I took them all back out, tapped all the dirt of and repotted, which helped. But it was such a mess.

I LOVE fresh basil, so this summer I just kept that one plant in the kitchen and skipped the rest because of my experience (last year). I'm new the plant world so appreciate anything I can pick up.

I'm so proud of myself, only one plant died last winter. I've been known to be the Grim Reaper of plants!:D

Okay, I did this a week ago and actually left the pots out on the deck since then (the weather's been nice!).

Sprayed them and then rinsed them about 3 days later.

They were on my covered deck and I kept checking for fruit flys and there weren't any.

Brought them back into the house today and so far so good! No fruit flys!!

THANK YOU COCHEESE!! I hated to think that I would have to get rid of these herbs and start all over again!

For anyone with the same problem, cocheese's suggestion appears to work!

If things change, I'll let you know.
