Decent Compact SUV

Recommended Posts

Define decent towing capacity. Compact SUVs are not known for super strong towing capacity. Though a properly equipped Jeep Liberty will get you 5000lb (I think that's best-in-class), but I wouldn't make a habit of it. If you're going to be towing more than that, you'll need to move up to something bigger.

The new Honda CR-V (2007) is a looker in my opinion, excellent MPG. A Toyota RAV4 has an available V6 that gets decent mileage (the V6 is fast too). The top seller is the Ford Escape. The Jeep Liberty is your best option if towing a major factor, due to its rigid rear axle.

If you can swing the extra $$, and MPG is a big issue, along with MPG, the Jeep Liberty has an available diesel that does well at the pump, and it pulls a lot too.

If MPG is king, and the towing is a "nice to have", then the Honda CR-V is your ticket along with finding a Ford Escape Hybrid (good performance and MPG, though not so much for towing).
So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh
Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright
'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life
Make light!

Looking to buy something that I can tow a yet to be purchased, uh, what do you call em, pop up tent trailors.

As far as "towing capacity", if a vehicle says towing capacity 2000 lb.s, is that actual weight of the trailer?? And ol' girl will be using it for driving around town, work and such (mpg).

thanks

Just check the manual on what the vehicle is capable of towing. I currently have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and it's towing capacity is about 6000lbs.

I have a tent trailer (what you're calling a "pop up"). It's a 15 footer (quite large for a tent trailer) and it's weight is about 1500lbs empty of all my stuff. Loaded (with water in the tank and all my other shit - propane tanks, etc) it's probably about 2000 to 2200 lbs. Quite light. I towed it with a Bronco II (V6, 5 spd) no problem. You'll probably be fine with a smaller SUV.

edited to add: The towing capacity they list is the TOTAL weight of the trailer ... meaning fully loaded with "stuff". Keep that in mind. If you're looking at a vehicle that can tow a 2000lb trailer, it's 2000lbs LOADED ... and water weighs a LOT!! But if you're looking at a tent trailer, mine is big and it's total weight loaded is about 2000lbs.

Have fun!!!

Subaru Forrester...best thing going...PERIOD!B|

Agreed! Bought mine back in March and haven't regretted a single thing. I've put over 15,000 miles on it (bought at 90k) and it's had no issues.

Does pretty well off-road getting to BASE objects as well.
