lisamariewillbe 1 #2 October 2, 2006 They can be damaging to the grave stones.... Take pictures instead, esp if your talking about the really old ones in St Marys.Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this
steveorino 7 #3 October 2, 2006 I did it with some youth back when I was a Youth Pastor in Alaska. Get permission from the cemetary first. Be respectful (be quiet and walk around graves as much as you can) I saw some interesting stuff. The saddest was a 16 year old's poem about how Leukemia sucked. steveOrino

lisamariewillbe 1 #5 October 2, 2006 Because overtime the gravestones weather, become brittle and can take little input to ruin it. If she is talking about some from back home, most are already damaged because of the enviroment and vandals. Ive done it with newer ones but I wouldnt with the old ones. http://www.gravestonestudies.org/faq.htm#Some%20Gravestone%20Rubbings%20Dos%20and%20Don'ts Ive alot of pictures of gravestones.... I personally like it better Bobbi - The ones down by the waterfront, if rubbing those get permission, from what I understand its illigal to even touch those ones.Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this
SkydiveStMarys 0 #6 October 2, 2006 Yeah I did some research on how to be careful. Which ones work best and which ones to stay away from, which typically are the older ones because of what the grave marker is made of. Yep also read about getting permission too, which I will do that. Yep, also know to be respectful when entering a cemetery, which by the way is one of my favorite places to be. Using a camera is not what I want to do, yes it will get the "job" done, but part of the reason I want to do it is for the artisic value too. Yep typically the civil war, any war tombstones actually, it is illegal to touch them, I am heading up North again to visit my parents and my brother has a cemetery behind his house that has a few graves there that I want to do. There are a few others up North that I want to do too, because of special meaning to me. BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. A miracle is defined by gratitude. guppie01 0 #8 October 2, 2006 Bobbi, If I ever head East... you and me baby! I love the cemetery. In college I would go to the cemetery to study.... when I'd tire of reading, I'd walk around with a recorder or piece of paper recording all the gravestones. I'd love to visit some cemeteries back east - I can't imagine the history and energy. g"Let's do something romantic this Saturday... how bout we bust out the restraints?" Muenkel 0 #9 October 2, 2006 Up here in Massachusetts, you'd be surprised at how many little historical cemetaries there are. Most people don't even know where they are. Whenever I hike in the woods, I will come upon tiny cemetaries that have no road access and date back to the early 18th century. There's usually only about 15-20 grave markers, but they are fascinating. Those I would just take pictures of as they look so fragile. lisamariewillbe 1 #11 October 2, 2006 Then jeesh girl get to rubbing..... Take pictures also for refrence. If its in your brothers backyard all you need is his permission right? Im a cemetary nut case. I have a love hate relationship with them... I love to go to them but once there I feel sad, and sorrow for people I didnt even know and Im generally sad for the remainder of the day. Nathans not to fond so I get grunts of disapprovel when I make him stop the car so I can run into one... Heres my flickr, I just uploaded some more but theres some on the first page as well as page two http://www.flickr.com/photos/lisamariewillbe/Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this
SkydiveStMarys 0 #12 October 2, 2006 "If its in your brothers backyard all you need is his permission right?" No no no! LOL! His backyard butts up against a cemetery. He jokingly says that when he dies, his wife can just chuck him over the fence. This is one cool ass cemetery!! Huge markers, when huge markers were the rage, crying angels draped across the markers, beautiful. Mausoleums (sp?), mini ones, the kind that fit 3 to five but the buildings are huge. To walk thru it, really walk thru it, would take about 6 to 8 hours. Sooooo much history there, unbelievable!! Great pics! BobbiA miracle is not defined by an event. lisamariewillbe 1 #18 October 2, 2006 Most my moms family is there.... South Boston Since I dont like my moms family we did alot of sight seeing. Trail of tears in Boston was very moving....In Salam we did so much.... alot of history there, from witches to pirates..... kids just loved it. They wouldnt let us do rubbings, thats where I learned that it can be damaging, so for the kids they had a workshop with grave plates to look exactly like the ones in those pictures... they provided paper and gave us lessons.Sudsy Fist: i don't think i'd ever say this Sudsy Fist: but you're looking damn sudsydoable in this
