freeflir29 0 #4 September 22, 2006 Cool PIC! It's cooler to watch in person though. I got to watch that once at a range in Wisconsin. Single seater. It was an OLD Vietnam vet that had an engine out on an F-16. He tried to restart twice. Cool as a cucumber. He asked if I could come pick him up and before I could respond........He was gone........ Just pointed the plane out towards the largest part of the range and pulled the handles. It was his 5th ejection though. The previous one had been 20 some years earlier out over the gulf of Tonkin from an F-4 that was on fire. Damn if that pic wasn't an expensive ejection. A 2 seater is a "Block 40" deep attack aircraft. Many millions more dollars of electronics in that one than a regular single seat.

Randy_H 0 #16 September 22, 2006 I always thought that F-16s were single seat fighters and the F-14s & F-15s had the dual seats. Maybe the later revisions of the F-16 had dual seats? Anyways, really cool picture, and it almost looks like the pilot on the left is setting up the swoop! 010010010110010101100001011101000111000001110101011100110111001101111001
Revillusion 0 #17 September 22, 2006 I know Wingnut can probably answer this, maybe some else. Would fuel starvation or low flamout without a hard runway to land on be sufficient "reason" to eject? downwardspiral 0 #18 September 22, 2006 I saw a lot of cool things as an Air Force brat. - Got to sit in the ready room during the pilot briefing for Red Flag at Nellis AFB. - Got to sit in the Range Control room as they simulated combat during Red Flag. - Saw a B-1 rotate over 90 degrees while turning base in the pattern at Langley. - 30 minutes in an F-15 simulator at Langley. Toggle cursor over blip. Push button. Locked on target. Too easy. - Saw an F-14 buzz the carrier deck at the speed of sound at approx. 500 feet above deck level...and I was standing on the flight deck! It was family day on the USS Independance and the fly by was quite the treat. - At a Langley AFB base commander retirement ceremony (at dusk) two F-15s did a fly by in formation, pulling straight up directly above the ceremony as they lit their afterburners. - Seen flying numerous different aircraft including the SU-27, Mig-29, F-117, and B-2. - Shared the pattern with numerous different aircraft while piloting a cessna-172. - not to mention the many air shows. Even though I had to find new friends every 3 years, I wouyldn't trade growing up as an AF brat for anything. Thanks for sharing the pic. edited to add: The Range Control room at Nellis is where they have a giant computer screen that shows, digitally, the entire range and the aircraft in it as they perform their combat manuevers.www.FourWheelerHB.com

ME TOO!!! Such awesome experiences, moving to exotic places like the Azores, Okinawa, etc. And Edwards was just the SHIT for a wannabe fighter jock teenager like me... My very first job as a 15 year old (being a bagger at the commisary on base doesn't count ) was a summer youth program job at Edwards... I was a kid janitor for the offices that housed the test pilots and support crews for the B-1 Bomber program. That was in 1985 and it was not yet operational... I was there for the first delivery to Dyess or Offett, I forget which... anyway, my boss was a hard ass old man, but the flight crews new of my great desire to be a pilot and they would make up excuses for me to have to be w/ them in their crew trucks as they took the pilots out to the ramp where the B-1 was... then we'd go out to the flight line and I got to help them set up the video equipment, since they still videoed every takeoff and landing... The F-111 chase plane would take off, we'd be right beside the runway... so cool... he'd come around and pick up the B-1 which would then take off... OMG was it LOUD!!!!!!!! Often the B-1 would come around, wings swept and do a low fly-over of the video crew... it would make my insides shake, it was so thunderous. Best times of my life right there... I miss Lee. And JP. airtwardo 7 #22 September 22, 2006 It's cooler to watch in person though. *** I'll say! I saw a Tomcat Ejection up close and personal about 15 years ago...They were out playing, and headed back in to Miramar NAS when the shit hit the fan. The were right over down town El Cajon going West and coming down FAST. There was nothing else they could do but point it at the most open area around, Gillespie Field, and punch out. I was sitting in my Jeep at the airport talking with a friend in front of his hangar and saw the whole thing. The F-14 was at about 3-400 feet when they pulled the handle, it sounded like the jets were in full afterburner, but it was flying incredibly slow with a slight nose up attitude. Saw and heard the canopy go and the rockets fire...Whooooosh! Saw the canopies deploy...heck we could see the visors on the helmets, but with the trajectory and the breeze it was obvious that they wouldn't make the airport...a few blocks short of it. Kinda lost track of THEM because now here comes this roaring monster seemingly RIGHT AT US! It continued to pitch nose up as it came, flying slower and slower across the ground...but not dropping. It flew almost right over our heads...maybe 200 feet north of us, forward speed about 30 -40 mph and 75 feet off the deck... Louder than any Harrier I've watched. It flew a lazy arc around the tie down areas and suddenly turned 90 degrees left and started to go nose down. It went through a hangar less than 100 yards from where I was at, and exploded. One guy in the hangar was killed, another next to him lost a leg. A couple others had severe but not life threatening burns. The pilot died either during the ejection or hit something on landing, his gear was hung up in some power-lines, but he was on the street. The RIO suffered a broken leg. I immediately started snapping pics with the old Nikon, and was 45 minutes into documenting it, when two armed Navy guys grabbed me and and demanded the film. I tried to 'sweet talk' them, but... THEY WERE NOT FUCKING AROUND! Told me to either surrender the film 'voluntarily' or they would TAKE the camera and have me arrested. And THEY would remove the film from the camera EITHER way...so I handed it over. They must have thought that I had some pics 'during' the crash itself, which I didn't, because they were very careful to remove the film intact. ...It was my 3rd roll. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
simplyputsi 0 #23 September 22, 2006 You were spoiled. I just wasn't old enough to get the treatment like that there. I was lucky though to be one of the very first to see the B-2 in the daylight though as dad was on that project. I was lucky enough to use the b-2 simulator as well except they had the hydraulics(sp) turned off. It was still very realistic. I dove that sucker towards the ground I had the pilot go ok ummm level it off a bit. Then I banked it pretty good as well. It was sweet!!!!! Got to love the shuttle landings. I remember it flying over our house once and I was like ummmm the runway is pretty far away they aren't gonna make it. They did though. I wish I would of gotten a picture of that.Skymama's #2 stalker -
