South from Granada - part 1

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Wifey and I have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Andulacia (Spain). We've had 2 weeks of Site seeing, great food, warmth and paragliding.... and trying to find somewhere to settle!!

We started with a week of flying both in Sierra Nevada and on the coast - my 2nd favourite flying playground (after the French Alps). Then we toured around Andulacia for a week (Staying at :- El Torcal, Ronda, Arcos de la Frontera, Carmona, Cordaba & Granada). We took in some great trips and visited some wonderful places.

Anyway, here's the first of a few photos.....

Saturday : Our tour started from the 1st weeks hotel at Almuñécar clicky and headed towards Malaga and in land to a wonderful hotel in the "El Torcal" park; a beautiful limestone area.
The hotel - La Posada Del Torcal clicky is set in wonderful grounds, has great food and a warm reception. We only staryed one night, but could easily go back for longer.

As we left for the next location, we stopped off at a Wolf park - where they do some great work and have an excellent informative tour. clicky

Sunday : We drove through El Chorro (great rock climbing area) to stay the night in the Parador clicky in Ronda. A pretty town perched on top of a rock gorge. It's also the birth plave of bull fighting (no matter what you thoughts are about this 'sport', this is a great place to discover it's history).

Monday & Tuesday : We stayed at another Parador, this time in Archos de la Frontera (another pretty, white housed town built high on a rock).

We used Archos as a base to tour around the beautiful Costa de Luz, from Vejer (great beaches!!) all the way up to Cadiz (I love this town:)

Wednesday : We moved up to a Parador at Carmona, so that we could see Jerez and had hoped to see Sevilla but ran out of time.

At Jerez we toured around a Fino Bodega - smelt great and tasted yummy.....

We also visted the Roman Necropolis in the lower town of Carmona - and well worth a visit it is too!!

Thursday : The highlight of the trip (for me) was the Mosque/Catherdral at Cordoba. This impressive building was initially the site of a Christian church, over built by a really impressive Moorish Mosque and converted into a Catholic Catherderal. What ever you religion, I think that you would be hard pushed not to be impressed by this exceptional building. The ying and yang of the 2 very different styles (simple Moorish through very elaborate Catholic) provides a very stong contrast.... see...
