wmw999 2,588 #1 October 10, 2006 We're trying to plan a trip to NZ, and therefore trying to find options for traveling within the country. Plan is currently to fly into Auckland 11/20, fly to Christchurch on the 23-25th, then fly from Queenstown back to Auckland on 12/3. Are there any inexpensive airways that do that kind of thing (in the US, Southwest would be the one I'd start with), or are they all based on round-trip tickets? I tried Air New Zealand's multi-city builder, but it assumes that you're flying from each city to the next, and not using any other means between them. thanks in advance Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

NWFlyer 2 #3 October 10, 2006 I did that a few years ago (flew into Auckland, train/ferry/train to Christchurch, drove all around the South Island, then flew back to Auckland). I don't recall the flight to Auckland from Christchurch being that pricey (it was on ANZ). What happens if you price them out as individual one-way tickets?"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. bigway 4 #4 October 10, 2006 Riing up flight center in new zealand. It can cost around 500nzd to get from auckland to queenstown, it is cheaper to fly to australia. I personally would suggest driving or you will miss it all. The best part about new zealand is the drive from top of south island to christchurch and then queenstown up the west coast. Driving around the west coast is the best part of the country and probably the greates thing to do. You could buy a decent car for $1000nzd get a ferry across the islands for $140nzd and petrol for driving the whole country would only be a couple of hundred bucks nzd. You can then leave your car at an auctions in auckland and they will mail you the cheque when they sell it. seriously wendy, if you can drive, then drive, or you really will miss outt he best parts, fox glacier, nelson, marlborough sounds, milford, wanaka, kaikora, picton. You can hire a speed boat for !40 for a full day and take it waterskiing around the marlborough sounds for a day, climb a glacier on fox, go on a boat cruise in milford etc. I did alot of work in tourism over in nz so if you want any info yell out.... I think you will also find alot of good info from rhys about the south island. There are some great things in the north as well but driving in the south is a must do! You could drive from auckland to christchurch in 13 hours. Christchurch to queenstown in 5 hours, queenstown up the west coast to picton in about 8-12 hours (i think), ferry across to the north and then wellington to auckland in 8 hours. Go via the corromandel, add another 4 hours. bigway 4 #5 October 10, 2006 Anz is not around anymore. It can be very pricey, so much cheaper to drive, especially if two people and so much more worth the drive. I can not stress it enough that driving will blow your mind away, flying and you will leave new zealand with no clue on how beautiful and clean this country really is. .Karnage Krew Gear Store . I was using it as an abbreviation for Air New Zealand! It sounds to me like Wendy's planning to do a mix of driving or other modes of transport and flying. I did the flight back to Auckland because at that point in my trip it was just me (after spending 12 days driving around the South Island with friends) and I had to get back up north for a scuba class. It's the same reason I took a train from Auckland to Wellington, and from Picton to Christchurch - at that point I was alone, and it was easier than driving by myself."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. bigway 4 #7 October 10, 2006 ANZ i thought was called ansett new zealand. I might be wrong though was sure they are closed and they were the cheaper one. Air new zealand is a very expensive air line. There are lots of small airlines but as new zealand is a tourist destination (disneyland on crack) everything is very pricey now. .Karnage Krew Gear Store . wmw999 2,588 #8 October 10, 2006 We're taking an 8-day trip with a group involving hiking and kayaking along the west coast; it's just that the group ends in Queenstown and starts in Christchurch. We also leave NZ the day the tour ends. We're spending several days before the tour on North Island and around Christchurch. bigway 4 #9 October 10, 2006 Awesome, the hiking will be brilliant and sounds like you will be there before all the tourists. during tourist season when it is peaking the trails can have more people on them that the city streets and really not be as good as it should be. For the days you are spending in the north island make sure you do not spend more than a day in auckland city and if you do spend the day in auckland city get on a public bus and go to Mount Eden, one tree hill, devenport, waiheke island, great barrier island, devenport.. the city is very boring itself. You would love the coromandel, it is only an hour and a half drive from the city as well. While around ChCH i would suggest hiring a car for the day and taking a drive to Kaikora, this place you can go swiming with hundreds of dolphins all at once in the ocean. Sorry i can not help you with flying, maybe when rhys gets online he will know of some of the saller airlines around the south island but i think you will be stuck with Air New Zeland. My cousin is a travel agent there so i will send her an email asking for any tricks of the trade about flying around there and get back to you. No matter what you do i am sure you will love the country, just try and not waste days in the cities, they are all the same in every cuntry. .Karnage Krew Gear Store .
