holy shit.... close call!!

Recommended Posts

At a DZ-to-be-unnamed, the only sod runway ran right up to the road, and had warning signs that stated "NO PARKING - LOW-FLYING AIRCRAFT". Nevertheless, there were always bozos, (who had somehow had obtained drivers licenses w/o the skill to read), who would park right on the threshold of the runway to watch the pretty parachutes.

One of the pilots got so fed up with this, that he let it be known he had a new personal goal to leave a tire track on the next car to park there.

One day as we were packing, we heard the 182 coming in for landing and suddenly heard a sound like "TWANG!...Twang...twang...".

Sure enough, he had hit the radio antenna of a car parked on the threshold, and it's owner ran scurrying to move it.

My old DZ's main road into the property was also the runway. There were lights when you entered.

But you still had to look to be sure.

Made for interesting "entrances" ...

I bet it did! "The Farm" dz in Georgia uses an airport down the road from the dz, but in sometimes the planes take off from the lz... like first thing in the morning or after the last load has jumped... and when he brings it around to land, it's right over the road, banking hard and it's a SIGHT to behold for sure!!! Awesome!!!

It is AWESOME! This was the main road into the DZ owners home (and the DZ property). Just had to look ahead, behind and UP when you entered!

Thank God the guy on the right has a fat zoom lens... he may not have gotten a good look at the plane otherwise...

What an expensive lens that is, too.

Although, I've got to say, when I'm involved in shooting something, and I'm on my long lens (not nearly as good as his, though), I can loose track of things easily...especially if I'm tracking a subject and waiting for the light to be just right, or the angle to be perfect, or the animal to do something. I've even stepped on people, fallen off curbs, and nearly got hit by a car when working with my long lens.

It can absorb you...and if you're intent things around you can get past you very fast...like target fixation, I guess...you forget where you are in your concentration of doing it. Which is why, when I decide it's time for me to go street shooting, I will bring someone with me so I have a second pair of eyes watching my happy ass while I'm lost behind the lens. Hopefully, that will keep me from getting into serious trouble.

Elvisio "countin' the pilot's nosehairs" Rodriguez

70-200... he was getting sweet shots from a 1/4 mile out, most likely... and was "counting the pilot's nosehairs" shortly thereafter!!
