jtval 0 #6 October 13, 2003 ok lemme reitterate that. the base of where we were was about 1500ft above vegas. the top was 2000ft. in the area we were at, there were no clear edges to jump from (we Looked). there is a whole diff range of MT. to go up though, but it still didnt seem like there was a flat edge to base from!My photos My Videos

McDuck 0 #12 October 13, 2003 Geez! I forgot that I even HAVE rock climbing gear! Ever since I started skydiving, my rock climbing stuff has been sleeping the long sleep. those pics make me want to take it all out and dust it off for those times when I'm not skydiving...maybe it's better if I just let it all sleep. jtval 0 #13 October 13, 2003 GEAR??? we dont need no stinking gear! actually It woulda been great to haver some gear. but Ive only done freeclimbing at redrock. if I had gear it would be a whole new world of climbing but for now I take my own pathes that I can handle but still push my limits a bit each timeMy photos My Videos
rehmwa 2 #14 October 13, 2003 nice - here's one from my Colorado trip three weeks ago if you like that sort of thing. Pretty easy for 5.10, lots of "texture". Are you wearing just sneakers (for sneaking)? If so, you'd really like climbing shoes. I don't have them, but a climbing instructor friend of mine in Estes Park says Mad Rock shoes are very good for the money. I don't recall off hand what brand mine are. ... McDuck 0 #15 October 13, 2003 QuoteGEAR??? we dont need no stinking gear! I just meant the shoes and chalk bag...at least for free climbing. I have a harness, but I can't top-rope, so I don't see any reason to buy rope at this point in time. Before I started skydiving, I was getting ready to take a top-rope class. One stop at that really cool place we could see from the freeway every time we drove home from rock climbing, and I aspired for more altitude and less chalk. SkyPsycho 0 #17 October 13, 2003 redrocks , awesome place to climb, i did my first 5.12 there redpoint onsight. now i prolly couldnt haul myself up a 5.9 with the help of ascenders, i havent climbed in quite a few years. only thing that sux is the one way loop road, once yer past the first turnout, yer screwed, gotta go the whole way around, and most of the climbing is there and past. ill have to look around and dig up some pics from there.....i should have quite a few. that used to be my base for climbing trips. cheap airfare and hotel to vegas, extend the return trip and get a rental car and go all around from there. northwest cali, arizona, southern cali, utah, all within 8 hours of vegas, and awesome climbing. btw, there are plenty of much higher walls than 700 ft, especially in black velvet canyon, thats way off to the left if ya look out standing by the visitors center. awesome solid 5.9 there called epinephrine. its about 1600 vertical feet of climbing in 18 pitches, and plan on sleeping on the wall for at least one night.after the last pitch, you still scramble up a ramp another 700 ft to the top. so yes, there are some high walls there. actually at night in that part of the canyon, the yag laser on one of the hotels used to hit the wall and looked pretty cool. _______________________________ HK MP5SD.........silence is golden
freakyflygirl 0 #18 October 13, 2003 Wow!! Cool pics!! I was about 8 years ago when I was pregnant with my son. I just sat on the ground and watched others go up. jtval 0 #19 October 13, 2003 glad I could help stir some good memories all this climbing talk 5.12, top rope... I am no pro I have no idea what they even mean! I know the 5.12 etc is something about degree of difficulty etc. and I believe top rope means that the person who is leading the climb etc.. we go for fun and do what we can. I dont know anyone who is really into climbing etc. I would love to get into it but I wouldn't know where to start...well I guess the bottom is a good place! LOL so if anyone wants to give me sone advice about climbing or even show me(kelly, rosa) I am too dumb to have an ego! and I live 11 miles from redrock. Im already there! just lemme know when youll be there! My photos My Videos
McDuck 0 #20 October 14, 2003 Pssst! Top-roping is when you're the person climbing up first and setting the rope and it's anchor points. You know, so other people can follow after you with less opportunity for mishap. Hooknswoop 19 #21 October 14, 2003 Quotessst! Top-roping is when you're the person climbing up first and setting the rope and it's anchor points. You know, so other people can follow after you with less opportunity for mishap. Um, that's lead climbing. Top roping is when the rope goes from the belayer, up to an anchor point and back down to the climber. Top ropes can either be set by rappeling down, or by someone leading the climb and setting it up at the top and removing the protection as they are belayed back down. LouDiamond 1 #22 October 14, 2003 QuoteTop-roping is when you're the person climbing up first and setting the rope and it's anchor points. You know, so other people can follow after you with less opportunity for mishap. I think your confused. What you described is known as leading. Top roping is where the rope is already fixed to an anchor at the top of the climb and the climber ties in and is belayed (by a buddy on the ground) as he climbs. If he falls the buddy catches him on the rope. No protection or anchors are emplaced by the climber. This is the type of climbing that is typically done in a climbing gym."It's just skydiving..additional drama is not required" Some people dream about flying, I live my dream SKYMONKEY PUBLISHING
McDuck 0 #23 October 14, 2003 Hmmm, it was my understanding that top roping is what you have to DO to get the rope to the top, before anyone else can climb. At least, that's the way it was explained to me at the climbing gym we frequented. I may need to check my information again.Kevin - Sonic Beef #5 - OrFun #28 "I never take myself too seriously, 'cuz everybody know fat birds don't fly." - FLC Online communities: proof that people never mature much past high school. McDuck 0 #24 October 14, 2003 It seems I was misled: "Top rope - n/vb a climb that has the rope anchors preset at the top of the climb. In general this requires shorter falls than a 'lead'." - www.rockclimbing.com dictionary. SkyPsycho 0 #25 October 14, 2003 ok, here r some pics i found first is in redrock canyon.......hiding out in the wall second is soloing in the sierras on a 10b.....dont try this at home.....look ma, no ropes (i used to be a good climber....seriously) bouldering on a 10b overhang about 15ft off the deck..... last one, my buddy got fancy with the camera and tilted it.......use gravity and the direction of my hair to see which way is vertical.......12d boulder problem, not very far to fall, so u can attempt it ad- nauseum _______________________________ HK MP5SD.........silence is golden
