But I don't want 22"ers

Recommended Posts

I really don't. Infact I would have to put a lift on my VW to put 22" wheels on it. Hell, I don't even want 17" wheels. All I want are some decent/nice racing inspired 15x7 wheels. Then I don't have to do any sort of serious modifications to the suspension or fenders AND I can have more then 1/4" tall sidewalls on my tires.

It would be funny to see my old VW rolling on 22s, though. Sort of like a 1990 Chevy Caprice on 22's. It sits tall enough that it looks like a 4x4, but the suspension is so tightly wound to keep the tires from rubbing that its like have no suspension at all. So it looks funny AND rides bad? Hmmm...

Atleast the wheels and tires I put on my truck actually served a functional purpose.

Anyways, after spending about 90-minutes on the web looking at wheels I've *finally* found a set of 15x7s with a close enough offset to fit my VW. I'll still have to redrill the hubs to do what I want, though, since there's only about 4 wheel choices for a 4x130mm bolt pattern.

Just had to add some commentary about trends in wheels after clicking on wheel after wheel that I thought looked "ok" to see that the smallest size they were sold in were 18x9s.

What sort of VW?

Drilling your hubs? Do you need to relocate the studs?

With the current trend, in 20 years or so we'll be up to 30 inch wheels as factory equipment.

A 1973 1302 SuperBeetle. I've had the car for 11 years, rebuilt it once in 1995 and drove it daily for 5 years. Now I'm about to sell my truck and put the VW back on the road. This time I actually have a little bit of money I can spend so I can do it right with better quality parts on the drivetrain.

Yup, drilling new holes in the drums. Did I say hubs? Crap man, I must be tired, sorry. I'll have to put studs in the new holes for new wheels, the original design used special stud bolts that bolted into the drum instead of the standard stud/nut setup that modern vehicles have.

30" wheels? I bet we see them in a few more years, hell, there's a 330mm rear motorcycle tire on the market too. Someday, someone will have a 1/2 ton pickup with a 8" lift and 40" tires. The wheels will be 38 of those 40"s.[:/]

I would have expected that aftermarket shops that do all the offroad stuff would have plenty of that kind of hardware. Maybe offroaders aren't so interested in the styling of the wheels.

Selling your truck! Galaxies are colliding! :D

I remember that old beetles had the weak seat attachments that will tear out in a crash. You're probably all over that issue already too.

Good luck, post pics.

Its old, been through hell and has a lot of miles on the odometer. Still a good truck for someone, but I'm tired of fixing it. I also don't need a truck as often as I used to (it used to be quite often I was hauling or pulling something), so I'm not going to justify another truck payment.

That VW was paid for when I bought it in 1995. So I get to do what I want with it within my budget for everything up to the engine. The truck's price will be buying the engine. A professionally built (this time, instead of me) motor, probably 2180cc.

The seats are being replaced this time around, I've got the seats picked out and I'll weld new brackets to the pan.

Here's a couple of pics of when I about to trailer it back to my place after my parents were nice enough to store it for me for a year.

What are you going for -traditional/ empi style or something more bling???

Not more "bling" and not traditional Empi. The traditional Empi has been done...and done...and done...and done. Well, you get it. I'm also not a "bling" sort of guy.

I'm going for clean looking, race inspired wheels. Think of it as German Look meets non-Porsche racing wheels.

Stuff like these:

Since I'm lowering the towering front end on my Super, I'm going to get tapered springs to go with the adjust-a-struts to fit 6.5-7" wide tires. With IRS on the rear its not that big of a deal. *might* need to use a spacer on the rear, no big deal.

And for the suggestion of a dune buggy. Oh hell no. Not with a Super. That front end is the same front end that was on the Type4, its best ability is on the road. If I had a standard Beetle, then *maybe* but then again, I hate seeing good bugs all cut up.

True there is no need to cut that one up from what I can see in the pictures.

I used to live in Germany back in the the early 80's and used to love seeing Hans the local VW mechanic racing up and down the Autobahn out running Porches like they were anemic.:D

Damn I bet those rich guys were really sad that they could have only gone faster by being towed by Hans:D:D

The interesting parts is he would say the same thing my dad said about our corvair turbo spyder wagon.

Don't abuse it by putting it up on 22" wheels. Please, for the love of Mike (I can say that -- I have a cousin named Mike :D). It's a Beetle; it has its place and its look. And jacked up on wheels isn't the look. I agree that the 15's would be best -- I hope you can find them.

My brother has one and loves it; he's always tinkering with it. But it still looks like a Beetle. Good seats are a great investment. His has all kinds of engine work. He has his own machine shop, and put himself through college as a mechanic. Nothing is more relaxing to him than getting dirty under a car, and he once suggested that the best bathroom reading is the shop manual for my vehicle.

Don't worry, it won't be abused like that! The largest I will ever think of going are 17" wheels, even then it looks kind of stupid, so I'm planning on sticking to 15".

It looks like it is in great shape.

At least you won't miss the air conditioning for a while.

Oh man, I would love to build a Type4 motor, that's well out of my price range. Especially since I would need to rebuild the tranny. Not to fit, they fit with no problems, just due to the HP that would go through it. That would blow the spider gears apart and snap the key off the shaft.

A solid type4 build up with a purpose built tranny is a $6k (and up) motor.
