Buried 0 #1 October 19, 2006 I dont understand why homeless people have the right to be picky. I was walking down the street durning lunch and a homeless guy asking for change. I usually dont give change, but i had a few sodas in my bag from a meeting earlier to bring back to my office for others. so instead of change i ask if he wants a soda. he says sure so i give him both. He then asks if they are diet, seeming that he wouldn't drink it if it was diet.I reply that "one is, if you dont want one just give it away" knowning that there are other guys around the area who would probably take it. seriously though, how can homeless people be picky!. i think if i ever become homeless, i'm going to ask if something is organic before I accept it. DrewEckhardt 0 #5 October 19, 2006 Quotejust a tip here: Not all beggars are homeless, and not all homeless are beggars. Federal minimum wage is $4.76 an hour after you take out social security + medicare, less any reduction you get in government benefits. Anecdotally beggars seem to get dollars fairly often. If they can do that 5X an hour, they'refinancially better off than they are working a menial job, don't work as hard, have flexible hours, have no dress code, and don't need to pee in a cup. I don't blame 'em.
SpeedRacer 1 #6 October 19, 2006 http://www.wfie.com/Global/story.asp?S=1666725 this story confirms what I knew all along. I used to live in Fells Point in Baltimore, & panhandling was a big industry among the "homeless". Fells point has lots of bars & restaurants. Young yuppies & College kids come down there & barhop. The panhandlers really clean up. The cops had videos of the "Homeless" coming out of their apartments & getting blankets out of their cars before heading out to start their day. The blanket makes it look like they've been sleeping out on the street. Speed Racer --------------------------------------------------
Buried 0 #7 October 19, 2006 ha, yeah it isn't news, yet some people feel bad if they dont give. i can't understand that. I would feel bad if i do give since i know they dont really need it. kinda makes it bad for the people that really would need it. giving them drinks or something i got for free and dont want makes more sense to me i think we need to have a cage match between homeless vs 'homeless'! freeflir29 0 #8 October 19, 2006 When I used to carry a badge every day (In "plain clothes") I was approached both by people asking for money and prostitutes. You should see the looks on their faces when I would pull out my "Wallet" like I was going to look for money and flip the badge out so it was facing them. HILARIOUS! ACMESkydiver 0 #10 October 19, 2006 I give homeless people sammiches. That or fruit. Sometimes I buy too much fruit so before it goes bad I give it to the guy that looks kinda like Mr. Noodle that hangs out on the corner of Wax and 272nd. He's always very sweet and very appreciative and starts eating right away.~Jaye Do not believe that possibly you can escape the reward of your action. Gawain 0 #11 October 19, 2006 QuoteI give homeless people sammiches. TRUE STORY: 1995-97, I was living in Tampa, FL. I did a lunch run for some folks in the office one day, went to Blimpie's and got a whole bunch of subs, more than enough for everyone. Coming off the exit ramp, waiting at the light, there was a "homeless" guy standing and holding a sign describing hunger and despair along the foundation wall leading to the overpass along side us. I rolled down my window and tossed him a sub saying something to the effect of, "I hope things get better." The guy looked at me all bewildered, holding the sub, then he says, "What the F*CK, am I supposed to do with this?!" Then he spikes the whole thing on the pavement in front of him (turkey, lettuce, bread going everywhere) as the light turns green. WTF, indeed! Made for a good office story anyway... So I try and I scream and I beg and I sigh Just to prove I'm alive, and it's alright 'Cause tonight there's a way I'll make light of my treacherous life Make light! jtval 0 #12 October 19, 2006 I remember hearing a story (probably myth) about someone going around and poisoning the homeless. they would give em food laced with some shit. I rarely give them money, while I was in New orleans I took one to the guitar toting homeless guys to breakfast. he had 3strings but could get a decent jam going. so I told him if he'd like he can join us ( my 2 friends and I) breakfast and I'll buy. I ended up writing a song about it.My photos My Videos
karenmeal 0 #13 October 20, 2006 Ok.. funny homeless story. On the edge of campus (in Seattle) we get a bunch of folks who will stop you on the street and ask you for money. Few weeks ago when I was fresh out of surgery and walking to class with a huge immoblizing brace on my leg and a crutch this homeless guy stops me and asks if I can give him some money. He does a double take and notices the leg and says, "Oh, I'm sorry, you're probably broke too. Sorry to have bothered you. You have a nice day ma'am." I got a homeless guy to feel sorry for me!! Anyways.. I laughed about that one. And coincidentally, I am broke and am now accepting donations. arlo 0 #14 October 20, 2006 so what if someone hands him a half-eaten sandwich thinking it should be good enough. he shouldn't be picky. it's a little something called "dignity". there's no reason any person has to give all of that up in trade for a handout. for some, it's hard enough just asking. but hey, i'm a bleeding heart so i'm a little mushy around the edges... an example on the other side: i met a dude at the bottom of an exit ramp on I-10 as i was going to get some food. i cruised over to mickey d's, got myself and him some food, took it back, parked my car and ate lunch with him. he was very grateful for the meal. i asked his name and what his story was and it was a very nice conversation. more than anything, i think he appreciated the acknowledgement that he was a human being that had fallen on hard times and not one of condescension. it was a moment for me, that's for sure. yeah, there are some people that take advantage of it, but you know? there are some that really don't want to be there either and are swallowing their pride to even ask for shit. (in general) next time, take the time to look them in the eye as an equal human being and not down on them as some one who isn't worth the same salt as you. it really does make a difference, i think. oh, and i'm not directing all this at you or anyone else, just yacking about stuff that i think about sometimes.... take care, a
Michele 1 #15 October 20, 2006 Somtimes, we don't know the whole situation. I will give you that most homeless do far better than I do...and that I've tried to give food and the woman wouldn't take it (still in the wrap from the restaurant, too...). But sometimes, I think we don't have all the right information to make the judgment that if they refuse my handout, they're (this)(that)(the other thing). For example, if I gave someone a soda and they refused it, wondering if it were diet, I might be left with an impression that he's a picky mf-er. OTOH, he also might be diabetic, and doing what he can to control sugars in his diet. The point is, we don't know. And when an offer gets rejected, we are understandably hurt...after all, we are just trying to make someone's life a wee bit better. But sometimes, we take it so personally and it isn't about us at all...rather, it's something about them. And yes, there are some picky panhandlers...just like those who really are hungry. I just keep offering and if someone takes it, then I feel good. If they don't, I feel good. Now, I have to go study or I won't feel good at all.... SpeedRacer 1 #16 October 20, 2006 Quoteyeah, there are some people that take advantage of it, but you know? there are some that really don't want to be there either and are swallowing their pride to even ask for shit. maybe so. Most of the panhandlers I've met are not swallowing their pride about it at all. They're perfectly at peace with what they're doing. I've even heard one say that she didn't want to suffer the degradation of having to get a job & work for a boss. To her, panhandling was less degrading than a job. Different people view things in different ways. Most of us would find it humiliating to beg for money on the street, but there are others who have absolutely no problem with it. arlo 0 #17 October 20, 2006 i totally agree with that. i am not throwing a 100% of them are all having a hard time, but i would hope that others wouldn't lump them all into the "worthless sacks of ungrateful shit" category either...which tends to happen more times than not. it'd just be nice if judgement wasn't placed in EITHER direction... plur, a

SpeedRacer 1 #24 October 20, 2006 there is good American beer. I only occasionally drink imports. I don't understand why after 20 years of high quality craft-brewing in America, people still cling to the old myth about "crappy american beer." It's like judging all of American cuisine based on what you get in fast-food restarants. freethefly 6 #25 October 20, 2006 Begger standing on corner asking for handouts spots a man in a three piece suit. The man obviously has money. The begger says to him, "Hey, friend, can you spare a dollar or two". The man in the suit is noticably put off by this request and says "Sorry, I only have onehundred dollar bills". The begger says back to him while pulling a bank roll from his tatter jacket, "No problem, I can make change"."...And once you're gone, you can't come back When you're out of the blue and into the black."
