First Boogie

Recommended Posts

So I am going to my first boogie this weekend. Tell me your stories of your first boogie. Any advice or general things to keep on the lookout for would be welcome as well...

Of course, I already know to watch out for the guys who have done a bazzilion jumps, stopped counting a trazillion ago, and think they are Skygods :P

First of all you might want to lose that thought process.

What boogie you off to anyway?

Here's a link to a thread that has some good info as well as links to other threads with good info...

My first boogie was a fairly small one, but it involved a big road trip with two DZ.commers I'd only "met" online. It could have gone horribly, horribly awry, but it ended up being a total blast with lots of random, goofy memories (and memorable quotes that we still throw around today).:D

My biggest piece of advice would be this: don't let "boogie fever" cloud your judgment. If you're asked on a jump that you wouldn't do on any other Saturday at your home DZ, think long and hard about why you're doing it at the boogie.

And don't be afraid to say no to jumps if you don't feel comfortable. I got asked on 14 ways at my first boogie - I had about 40 jumps at the time and knew I didn't have the air awareness to be comfortable with that at the time. I said no. "C'mon, we'll just put you in the base." I still said no.

And have fun!

No worries Bigway, I was trying to be funny - didn't work apparently [:/]

San Marcos, a bunch of the people I do trust from SDH will be there, so it seems like a good place to start. I'm still so new at all of this, I need all the advice I can get.

Is it a big boogie.

You were funny, i was just hoping that you were trying to be.
All this talk about skygods, i have only ever seen one maybe. Most people that are shit hot at skydiving are usually the friendliest guys out there. The only reason they get that good is cause they have lots of friends to train with.

Thanks NWflyer - great links and advice!

I'll be thinking of you Kris!

I would say it's big, but I don' t have anything to compare it to. They are going to have a helicopter and balloon jumps - not that I can do those since I just have an "A", but I can jump the Casa and that sounds like a blast. Maybe I can get in my first 8 way the week after I got my license - how cool would that be? I better go buy a LOT of beer...

She's better off getting help from the experienced jumpers who *don't* have a skygod attitude.

That is so cool that you get to go to such a large boogie right after you get licensed...course it would be even cooler if you were coming to Salado:)

Have a blast jumping the CASA, and I'll see ya in Houston soon!

Here are a few random thoughts.

In my opinion the best dropzones and boogies have load organizers who are skilled in designing jumps that are challenging but within the capabilities of the people on the load. Ask about load organizers. If they have 'em, be sure to tell the load organizer your experience level.

One of the problems you will run across at boogies is a "zoo load" mentality where bigger is better. A dive that may start as a 3- or 4-way can quickly turn into a 12-way or larger. If you find yourself in that situation, be smart enough to get off that load. Not only will you likely be avoiding a very poor quality skydive, but you will be a lot safer. You need more experience before doing the bigger loads.

I'm sure this is going to annoy some people but the reality is you're a hot chick with a beautiful smile and that makes you a lot more likely to get invited on loads that are beyond what you can do safely. Be aware of that and stay within your comfort zone on load sizes and levels of complexity. You can do jumps that are plenty challenging and fun without going big.

I'd also suggest being careful about alcohol consumption. Alcohol flows freely at boogies after the jumping is done--typically there is a *lot* more alcohol than during normal DZ after-jump evenings. Know your limit and stick to it.

This applies to regular jumping at your DZ too. Be sure you have plenty of food and water on hand. It is very easy to get into the jumping and forget about eating and staying hydrated.

Unless you are staying in a motel (the best option in my opinion) or an RV, call the DZ and ask if they have a bunkhouse and whether they allow tents. If you stay in a tent, be *very* sure to check the forecast ahead of time. Staying in a tent when it's raining can really suck. BTW, if you are not going to be sleeping in a real bed, take a pillow or two. They are really, really nice to have when you are roughing it.

Don't forget to take some sunblock and insect repellent. It's better to have them and not need them than need them and not have them.

Walt

My first (and only, so far) boogie was the same weekend that I did my AFF!

I got spoiled. I scheduled my AFF not even knowing what a boogie was. I showed up on that Thursday, prepared to stay through Sunday, and to my surprise it was the weekend of the annual Jumptown Casa Boogie. I didn't even know what a Casa was, so I wasn't too excited at first.

Man, I had a blast, though! I did 6 of my 8 AFF jumps out of a Casa. Friggin' awesome. I met a lot of cool people, drank a lot of beer, graduated AFF, and watched a Casa ingest a bird with 30 people on board. :S

It was a great time. Although I wish I could've ran out of that Casa doing flips, there's always next year!

You'll have a blast. Enjoy that Casa. Do some cool exits out of that thing.

....or sometime you may run into a guy who bugs the crap out of you to do CReW with him, and you end up doing it just to get him to shut up...then before you know it, your freefall time abruptly stops adding up, and you get used to landing OFF the DZ!;)

Cool! Now I guess I just need a barbie to go with all of the beer I'm going to owe before the weekend is over...

Are you in the one on the right with two people in red and two barbies? Looks fun!

My First Boogie was the First Dublin Boogie.
Had no idea what to expect. Had exactly 20 Jumps and no rig.
The DZO of my tiny cessna DZ at that time let me borrow a Rig so I could Jump.
Didnt know anyone there. I was all quiet and shy hanging out by myself:$. Skymonkey one was the first to up and introduce himself. Offered to take me up and work with me to get anything I needed signed up on my A card.
By the end of the Boogie, I had many new Friends and a Certificate for 50% off a new Complete Rig from Aerodyne (Won in the Raffel).

My First Boogie fuckin Rocked!!
