just another cool plane pic... and an unexpected extra

Hmm.. a 727 is listed as one of the jump planes available for the upcoming 'African boogie'.
I wonder how that will work; anyone know what the speed of the jump run will be?
Loaded with jumpers at at 20000ft MSL with a depressurized cabin (jump door open), at what speed would a 727 stall ?
Jumpers would exit from the door closest to the nose, right ?

Not positive....but I think they can get down to 170 KIAS or so. Remember.....the IAS stall speed is the same at 50 ft as it is at 30,000. The only thing that changes is ground speed. ;)

A 727 huh......that's nothing. I recently flew on a Northwest DC-9!!!!! I didn't think there were any of those left flying in the US....:D

They would exit from the rear 'stair' door (opens down like a narrow tailgate). Just like they did at earlier Quincy boogies and how D.B. Cooper pulled it off. I believe the airlines later installed some sort of interlock to prevent opening the door in flight, this would have to be disabled. The 727 is perhaps the only passenger jet with such a door, making it suitable for jumping.

do they have the doors disabled on dc-9s and md-80s?

Nope...those are emergency exits on those planes. I DON'T think you would want to exit through that door in flight though. You would be getting out RIGHT in between the engines

What is different about it compared to a 727?

The 727 "ramp" puts you out down and away from the engines. On the DC-9 and MD-80 the door goes through the "Tail Cone" which is DIRECTLY between the engines. Just a guess...but I really don't think you want to do that. ;) Not saying you couldn't do it and live.....but it doesn't seem like it would be much fun. Plus....on an "operational" aircraft one of the emergency handles actually releases the tail cone. Yep....it just falls off.

I forgot about the tail cone actually coming off, probably would not find many operators that would want to fly like that.

Some DC-9s have airstairs under the tail that can be operated a few hundred times. I would expect that jumping from a DC-9's airstair would be similar to the airstair on a Boeing 727.
Later model DC-9 s and most of the MD series only have emergency exits in their tails. When you pull the handle for an emergency exit, the entire tail cone falls off. Strictly a one-time-only maneuver.

I was looking forward to a day in the not too distant future when we could skydive from a 747-500 and land on the roof of a luxury hotel and have your luggage delivered to your room while your already sipping cocktails or diving a coral reef. Or diving on some ....never mind!

I flew Northwest from Winnipeg to Mineapolis on a DC-9 as well - I couldn't believe how many they had at that terminal... the fleet is like 70 or something...it's actually their most popular plane.

Funny, when leaving San Francisco the ticket dude hassled me abouyt "DB Cooper and Northwest yada yada" and I zinged ghim back with 'ya but that was a 727 and I didn't think there were even any DC9's around anymore either!" He shut up real quick ;):)

Yep...I always laugh when the Continental Safety video plays. Their president says something about having "The most modern fleet in the industry." I keep picturing the one for Northwest. "We have the oldest fleet in the industry....but hey....our tickets are cheaper and.....they still fly...and and and/.....They're paid for!!!!" :D

...I wonder if they'd consider flying jumpers? Sure sounds like a fleet of jumpships to me... B|B|B|B|

ummm dude check the date of the rest of the posts............

ummm dude, I did.

I specifically acknowledged that. It is funny that exiting between the engines was seen as a problem.
