If you're travelling USA -> Australia, the only direct flights are on Qantas and United. Silly protectionist countries.

You can, however, go via NZ with Air New Zealand, and Air Canada go from Vancouver. There's also the option of going via the Pacific Rim and possibly through Hawaii/Fiji or similar.

why go direct though when Thai airlines give you one free stop over if you book from the states to Oz?
Book the ticket and then change it to stop over in thailand and it costs you nothing extra. If you fly with the chinese (wil tell you name when i find it out) they give you a free stop over and a 4 star hotel in shanghai for free.

so many good deals out there.
Quantas, air new zealand and singapore being the most expensive. Though if you fly air new zealand LA to Auckland to sydney, you may be lucky and be on a certain dropzone owner (captain of airline) flight and get to hang out in the cockpit with him

99.99999% of my miles are on UAL, which is in the Star Alliance with ANZ, so if I can get a schedule with that certain dropzone owner, I'll specificailly try and get on that flight :D
cavete terrae.

I know you're lookin' at me, but I don't fly internationally all that much (and when I do, I'm using the mass amounts of miles I've built up on domestic flights).

General tips:
-Check around a bunch of sites, including the airlines' own sites.
-Be flexible with dates and times. Check dates around your preferred dates. I think you said you were maybe leaving early December - that's actually a pretty decent time to get good deals because not a lot of people are traveling during that time.
-Check Tuesday and Wednesday departures - allegedly those are typically the chepest.
-Even if you're only looking for a one-way ticket, price out round trips. You may find cheaper deals even if you throw away the second half of the ticket.

Don't try to do it the other way around tho, if you skip the 1st half of a round trip ticket they usually cancel the whole thing.
My advice is to do what your parents did; get a job, sir. The bums will always lose. Do you hear me, Lebowski?
