Are you part of a Sorority or Fraternity?

Recommended Posts

I can never come up with anything to post, but I was actually wondering today how many skydivers were/are in a sorority or fraternity when they were/are in college. If so, which one, which chapter, and which school?

As for me... Alpha Phi, Theta Zeta chapter. Florida Institute of Technology.
Apologies for the spelling (and grammar).... I got a B.S, not a B.A. :)

I was, but it wasn't a social one... I was in a co-ed chemistry geek fraternity... Alpha Chi Sigma (thus the reason why us females could be part of it)

not a social one though....

What exactly are they? and why the greek letters for names? We don't have them in the UK. Are they limited to one college or does say Alpha Phi exist in all colleges in the US? Don't everyone join them? Why would you join them?

I was also a little sister for a fraternity.

Hahaha.... I was a PIKE (Pi Kappa Alpha) little sister. But it def. isn't the same little sister on my campus as little sisters on other campuses. There was no formal intiation of little sisters into the fraternity anymore, but it was still a nick name for the girls who hung out with them for all four years and/or dated a brother for a long time.

Sorority/Fraternitiy system is pretty big in the US. It's basically a social organization in college. I forget how many Fraternaties and Sororities exist right now, but it's a lot and each of them have x-amount of chapters through the US and Canada. So, that organization has groups at many different schools (these are chapters) united under the same greek name. (IE, Alpha Phi). People can choose to join or not be involved in the greek system at all while going through college. I honestly never saw myself going greek because of all the stereotypes, but when I got to a tech school that was 75% male, it was nice to get involved with a group of girls and have some chicks to talk to when your entire collegiate universe was mostly guys. Everybody has different reasons for joining, though.

Hope this helps! :)

nope. never had any real desire to do so.

Same here. I never quite understood *why* someone would join a fraternity. Not knocking it -- but the way I looked at it, it's kind of like renting friends. You pay dues, and you have former strangers that are now called your "brothers." Not to mention the outrageous hazing rituals people go through just to belong to these groups. I mean, soggy biscuits, WTF?! Only with a gun to my head, and even at that, it's not a definite thing. And people do this voluntarily to become part of a group. That always baffled me.

Ethnic/religious and academic fraternities -- I can understand why someone would join one of those, but I never quite understood the social ones. Again, not knocking it -- I've just been a loner as long as I can remember so social fraternities seemed very strange to me. I'm open to hearing another point of view on it, as I'm sure there must be a half-decent reason why so many people do it.

The former Gators will understand why I opted out of the Greek system.:P

But, every last one of my closest friends were in a sorority. And the first guy I dated was president of his fraternity (I had NO idea at first.:D).

I rather liked being the "floater".:P It always served me well; and saved me money.:)

I went to a university which has no sororities or fraternities. It was rather proud of that, too. Instead the students (on-campus and off-campus) are assigned to colleges which do the social thing. And, of course, there are a variety of activity, scholarship, etc. organizations.

I was the same way - I never got the paying for friends thing, and never really felt the need to belong to one, but some of my friends were members of greek organizations, and I ended up going to some formals with friends - I was everyone's back-up date.

Not a social fraternity, but I was in something with a greek name for having a kind of ridiculous GPA. I never participated other than accepting their offer for membership and don't remember what it was called.

I definitely would be in favor of more social-type meeting activities than sororities & fraternities.

If one doesn't already have friends when they go to college it definitely can be difficult to meet people and I certainly understand wanting to join for that reason--b/c unfortunately the most social events, activities, etc are greek-oriented.

:D;):P

Indeed---there was rarely an event I missed out on and the best part was not having to pay the "dues" to go to it, & of course drinking and enjoying the festivites on their bill. But, I also often volunteered with my friends, too. The best part is each one of my closest friends were in different sororities--so I got to pick which one was doing the most interesting (to me personally) volunteer work that day and tag along---actually for the volunteer stuff they were usually begging me to come along. Somehow they were always short-handed for their "philanthropy" events.:|

Like several other people have mentioned,I was never interested in joining frats or soroities b/c its such a snobby, political bunch of crap.I actually saw people wearing tshirts after Rush that said "if you're not wearing this shirt, you werent good enough" ie only the pledges that made it into the frat during Rush got those shirts and the poor people who tried and failed basically get the finger for their efforts.

I hated the clickish mentality of the frats/soroities b/c its was like,if you're not one of us then you're not allowed to hang out with us and vice versa. My best friend made it thru Rush and got into a soroity,I was proud of her b/c it was what she wanted, but then all of a sudden she had no time for me b/c it was all about her "sisters" and if she did have time for us to hang out it was on the sly b/c she was afraid her "sisters" would see us and they'd get pissed w/her hanging with a non-member.She ended up quitting after less and a semester b/c she hated it.I've seen transformations like this after every Rush where you take regular girls that were pretty cool and then after rush all of a sudden they were Stepford Wives...dress exactly alike, act alike, think alike, talk alike everything.

I was in a Greek Honor Society for my major(Criminal Justice), Alpha Phi Sigma, but it was all service and curiculum related.I thought about joining the CJ co-ed fraternity but never got around to it.They were cool b/c it wasnt a frat in the normal since of the word. They were basically a competition group. They would go to crime scene investigation comps, marksmanship comps,laws/statutes memorzation debate comps etc...it was all about our field of study and not about whos bringing the keg that night.

So my friends and I made our own group..an "anti-fraternity" Eta Omega Sigma---the Greek letters spelling out HOE for short. Our motto is"we dont have to buy our friends".Its open to anyone who believes as we do that theres something wrong with the system. We have tons of fun..all free, and be friends with whomever we want and theres no pledging or hazing or memorizing creeds and mission statements or any of that.Just come and be yourself and have fun.We go on trips during spring break and have tons of 'official' HOE parties. We even have a house. The friend of ours who gave birth to this concept and started the HOEs lets all of us come and go from his house as we please..any time, day or night..theres always people there. We're having a HOE sponsored Halloween party in a few hours as a matter of fact.

Of course all the other "legit" frats/soroities in town hate us..we've had our windshields smashed out on campus just for have 'our' greek letters on the window, our tires slashed and our cars keyed. We've actually caught some in the act of doing these things, but the school refuses to do anything about it ever when presented w/lists of names and the frats they belonged to.But,its ok.thats all part of going against the established norm I guess. They arent/havent gotten rid of us that easily.B|

(I mean no offense to those who are in legit frats and soroities..this is just our experiences with them and its just not our cup of tea)

ok, I actually joined my fraternity (a social one, but one full of engineers, Archetects, and Scientists) because of economic reasons.

As and engineer at the Univ of Cin I Co-oped alternating quarters so normal off campus housing was not viable since I moved every 3-6 months. It was much less expensive to live in the fraternity house then it was to live in on campus housing.

from what I understand historically most fraternities exist to instill disapline, develop a code of ethics in young men that chose to go to college instead of joining the military.

The fraternity I was in wasn't very "exclusive" when it came to who we were friends with... and although I did actually annoy some of my fraternity brothers with my sometimes unusual exploits (for example: I started joggling, ie juggling while running, while in college) for the most part I have some pretty good friends from my time in school. Though I'm not nearly as close to my fraternity brothers as my actual brother is... (since I'm generally more indendent then he is...)

I didn't see it as "buying friends" if it had ever seemed like that then I would have never joined... it was a less expensive roof where I was able to have 5 dinners cooked for me each week and there was a lot of food in the kitchen for the remaining meals. All for a bit more then 1000 dollars a quarter...

That's awesome -- I've seen people who do entire marathons joggling. What kind of distance did you do, or was it just for fun? I admire the coordination and concentration that takes, and once thought of taking it up myself.
