My New Toy

Recommended Posts

I made the same switch a little over 2 years ago and never looked back. my first mac was an iBook, which I replaced over the summer with a macbook. I unfortunately have to use a windows laptop for work, and every day I find more and more reasons to prefer the mac.

They used to be a little more expensive, but with the switch to intel based macs, they're no more expensive than a comperable Dell, HP, etc.
You can get one of the mac minis for about $800 with a monitor, or a macbook for about $1100. Great value if you compare what a $1100 mac has in it versus a Dell at the same price.

I worked professionally with Macs for a few years, as well as BSD Unix, Windows NT and Linux. That was nearly 10 years ago, though. Then again, that was back when working in the IT field was fun and had a future.

Even after all of that, I still run windows on my PC.

i switched to macs becuase they're BSD under the hood. I'd been playing with linux and liked it, but its not great on a laptop and linux needs a lot of polish to really be a great desktop/laptop os. So i went mac.. unix under the hood, great UI, and everything just works... not perfect but better than anything else i've used.

Not quite. OS X is based on the NeXt OS, which was based on a posix version of BSD. BSD is sort of a decendent of OS that Bell Labs developed which became Unix, so all in all its similar, but just like Linux is based on a posix system with Unix functionality, so is OS X.

You might consider that to be splitting hairs, but there is a difference.;)

Crap, I'm going to have to go to a biker bar and shoot some pool for a couple of hours to again repress my inner geek.:D

My wife and I just picked up the 17" Mac Book Pro. I'm a diehard fan of XP and Linux, but I'm really, really impressed with OSX and I can't wait to play with the Leopard version when it comes out next year.

I installed Boot Camp on her Mac and setup a dual boot with Windows XP to help ease her transition. No major complaints so far!:)
