bertusgeert 1 #1 November 3, 2006 Allright, my gf's 2 year old laptop is in dire need of some help. It is running VERY slowly. I ran disk cleanup on it first and deleted more than 2G of files. Then I ran Disk Defragmenter a few times. Look at the pictures to see before and after the two processes. Now, will it help to keep running Disk Defragmenter a 100 times? It changes so little every time I run it now that I think this would be neglegable. The computer now runs faster, but is still pretty ridiculously slow. The battery is also non-existent - rans for 5 minutes before it can't anymore. Thanks! --------------------------------------------- As jy dom is moet jy bloei! unformed 0 #2 November 3, 2006 it's probably filled up with spamware. Best bet would be to reformat it. Or download Ad-Aware and all the other ones to remove everything. This ad space for sale.
Fast 0 #3 November 3, 2006 Windows defrag sucks. Get something like perfect disk. That will make a much bigger difference. If it is running slow there is most likely a bunch of software that is running that doesn't need to be some of which is spyware, take a look and get rid of what you can.~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. beufus 0 #6 November 3, 2006 [RED]* WARNING *[/RED] Modifying your registry incorrectly can cause your computer to become unbootable, and require you to reload Windows. Do it at your own risk. [RED]* WARNING *[/RED] Start - Run Type "regedit" without the quotes. Navagate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run This is the list of programs that start when you boot. If you notice a program that doesn't belong, delete the entry. Also check out: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run Also you should look into getting the battery replaced if it's only hold a five minute charge. Fast 0 #7 November 3, 2006 One other thing to mention is that there is an effect caused by other computers that make you think your computer is slower than it really is. I run into this a lot at work because we are unable to replace the office computers every year, more like every 5-6 years we are replacing them. People end up buying or using a computer around thier home that is much faster than the one they use at work and complain that thier computer is slowing down. In reality, they are just getting used to something that is faster and they need to learn to make due. But in your case, that harddrive really is fragmented.~D Where troubles melt like lemon drops Away above the chimney tops That's where you'll find me. justinb138 0 #8 November 3, 2006 There is a feature of Spybot S&D that allows you to make changes to that part of the registry a little easier than regedit.
MattM 0 #9 November 3, 2006 I'm a firm believer in the 12 month rule. I re-install windows every 12 months. Make sure on the day you re-install that you install Virus/Spyware protection first thing. Matt
