skymama 37 #1 November 5, 2006 Living in FL over the years, I've gotten used to being woken up by noises like hurricanes, the sonic boom from the Space Shuttle and even those annoying tree frogs that sound like ducks. This morning was a new sound though...we woke to the loud, trumpeting sound of Sandhill Cranes that decided to land right in the backyard! While beautiful, if you're never heard them, these suckers are LOUD and they don't stop their calls until they are scared off or find something to eat. My cat was all excited to get outside when she heard the ruckus, but when I opened the blinds and she saw how big they were, she opted to stay inside. The birds hung out for about 10 minutes until the neighbor boys ran them off.She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
bbarnhouse 0 #2 November 5, 2006 I love the cranes! Prior to the hurricane destroying the team rooms at Lake Whales, I would often sit and watch the cranes that would feed there. They are very loud, but also very beautiful.
PLFXpert 0 #3 November 5, 2006 Me, too! Love them! Haven't had any land in my backyard, yet. But, we have geese that fly over the house at the same time every morning and they are pretty loud, too!Paint me in a corner, but my color comes back.

happythoughts 0 #7 November 5, 2006 Actually, they aren't very timid. My friend has a pitbull. When the dog is around them, they spread their wings and walk towards him. Down at the end of my road is a wetland area. At dawn, you hear them leave. At dusk, they return. They are loud.

FlyingJ 0 #11 November 5, 2006 I hear ya. I live in a camper on a state park in Florida, and during the winter months there are 30 to 50 cranes that call the area around my camper home. Not a thing I could do about it even if I wanted to. Good thing I'm a heavy sleeper!Killing threads since 2004.

masterrig 1 #14 November 5, 2006 We see a lot of Sandhill Cranes during their migration, here in West Texas. It'd get real interesting at times, when they'd be in the landing area at the DZ! Chuck

skymama 37 #24 November 9, 2006 This morning the cat wanted to go outside again, but refused when I opened the door and she made really weird meows. When I looked out, I saw that there was a hawk sitting on the fence. No wonder she didn't want to go! I don't know why so many birds are landing in my yard, I just live in a typical production home neighborhood. Maybe word has gotten out that there's a tasty-looking, fat cat living here!
