champu 1 #2 November 3, 2006 I love EepyBird. I had some fun with this last weekend at the dropzone. I still have a couple boxes of mentos and a few 2-liter bottles of diet coke left in my team room for those of you going to be around Elsinore this weekend... Skyrad 0 #3 November 3, 2006 Thats great. Performance art in motion. OK, so can any of you chemistry geeks out there give me the chemical equation for the diet coke mentos reaction? When an author is too meticulous about his style, you may presume that his mind is frivolous and his content flimsy. selbbub78 0 #7 November 3, 2006 Looks like a windy and cloudy day at the dropzone activity. The Coke has a low pH (a lot lower than mentos), and is considered much more acidic than the mentos. The coke is also carbonated. The mentos that you add to the coke is not very dense, and has a lot of air pockets in it. It also is full of sugar. It is also basic enough that it is dissolved by your own saliva. Mentos also has somthing in it like baking sodium (i'm not sure of the exact ingredient, since I don't have the ingredients in front of me). Mentos is basic enough such that it gets dissolved by your own saliva. When acids and bases mix, fizzing bubbling usually occurs. In this case, the coke's carbonation, and the mentos sugars react to form carbon dioxide which builds up in a sealed 2 liter bottle of soda. The gas is building up and trying to escape, and it causes the carbonated molecules to get excited and they move around and expolode. With help of a little agitation (mentos), it ends up bursting through the top of the bottle. Hope this helps CReW Skies, bubbles"Women fake orgasms - men fake whole relationships" – Sharon Stone "The world is my dropzone" (wise crewdog quote) "The light dims, until full darkness pierces into the world."-KDM

Buried 0 #9 November 3, 2006 they had that on mythbusters a few weeks ago. they were tyring to figure out what really makes that reaction... turned out it didn't work with smooth (flavored) mentos Where is my fizzy-lifting drink?

arlo 0 #12 November 3, 2006 i think the reason it works with regular but not smooth is the number of nucleation sites on the non-smooth mentos. i'm just too lazy to look it up to be sure.

boinky 0 #21 November 3, 2006 QuoteMUST FIGHT URGE TO TRY THAT...... No...you NEED to do it. Really! Just make sure you get lots of video. I tried it at my dz a while back. It's a real trick to get the lid off, get the Mentos in as neatly as possible and run away fast enough to not get showered in Diet Coke. If ALL the Mentos don't drop at the same time, you won't get as high of a fountain.Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? FlyingJ 0 #22 November 3, 2006 Does this work as well as/better than dry ice and water? Working at the grocery store back in high school we used to keep all the dry ice that came with frozen shipments, and then collect all the 3 liter bottles that were somehow damaged and not being sold and go out back and spend hours blowing them up. That ended the first time we decided to do it in winter and thought we had time to screw the cap on inside and throw the bottle out the back door. Blew up inside the stock room and resulted in a vist from the cops and fire department. Felt pretty bad about wasting their time.Killing threads since 2004.
