karenmeal 0 #1 November 10, 2006 What is a good bank? I'm so sick of Wells Fargo with holding my money from me and then charging me for it and pretending like it's a favor. So where should I put my money? Any banks that have easy online account access and bill pay, free checking.. etc? I live in Washington state by the way. -Karen "Life is a temporary victory over the causes which induce death." - Sylvester Graham
NWFlyer 2 #2 November 10, 2006 Karen - I've been really happy with WAMU. Tons of branches, free checking, overall good customer service. I was the same way with Wells - annoying fee structure that seemed to be constantly changing. I gave them the boot several years ago and switched to a credit union. Then when I left my job the credit union wasn't convenient anymore so I switched to WAMU and I've been very happy with them. There may be some banks that are only in the local area that have similarly good deals, but since I travel so much WAMU makes a lot of sense for me. I am philosophically opposed to paying ATM fees to get my own money."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. mailin 0 #3 November 10, 2006 I have online bill pay and online banking through my credit union. I also get free checking and companion savings account. I ordered free checks with our new address last week... I'm a huge endorser of credit unions, I just feel they have more to offer since they are normally non-profit. Lindercles 0 #4 November 10, 2006 WAMU annoys me because their names sounds like a wounded bovine. Similar to what Krisanne said (edit: and mailin, too), you may want to check into a local credit union. I've had good experiences with them.
NWFlyer 2 #5 November 10, 2006 Yep, credit unions rock. My only issue is that it can be harder to find an ATM/ access your money. I know there's some networks of credit union ATMs that you can use, and most credit unions don't charge you to use other banks' ATMs (but the bank who owns the ATM will still ding you). For Karen - if you do decide to look into a CU, I know some of the larger CUs in Washington have pretty loose rules for affiliation and you could probably qualify just by being a local resident."There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. wmw999 2,589 #6 November 10, 2006 If you don't ever need local access and have military connections (e.g. parent is former military) USAA has been very good to me. Easy online everything. Beerlight 0 #7 November 10, 2006 Bank of America has been awesome for the last 3 years. Never a glitch. Although I think you need direct deposit for free checking.......
Diezel 0 #8 November 11, 2006 I'm really happy with Citi. Works like a 'swiss made' watch for me. And they have a very competitive savings rates. Moving money between accounts and paying bills is a breeze. They even reimburse all ATM fees if there's no Citi ATM withing certain area around 'alien' ATM. You don't even need to ask for it, done automatically.

sunshine 2 #10 November 11, 2006 I'm a credit union person too!! I love it. Online banking is free, they have tons of ATMs around here, and my fave thing is having my money available immediately when i deposit a check in an ATM. I know some banks have a 24hr period before the deposited money is available for withdrawal. Also my credit union doesn't bounce checks. They charge a $20 fee to cover the check, then give a few days to pay whatever is due. ___________________________________________ meow I get a Mike hug! I get a Mike hug! USAA rocks! I have everything through them (bank, insurance, loans, etc.). Other than in San Antonio they only bank online so everything is geared to that. Since they don't have ATMs they refund the money you are charged by other banks. Checking is free. The only drawback is if you get lots of checks because you have to mail them in. I've managed to only have to do that a couple times a year. They have amazing hours - including weekends - and fantastic customer service when you need to get in touch for some reason.Killing threads since 2004.
