True Grit : Congratulations Andy Copland

Recommended Posts

Andy tackles his first outdoor rock climbs on English Grit at Yarncliffe Quarry (Derbyshire).

We had a great day sheltered in the quarry, from the howling gale.

We started on Angula Climb (HVD)
Ant's Crack (S, 4a)
Started on Aphid's Wall (E1, 5a) and finished up Ant's Arete (VS, 4b)
Latecomer (HS, 4b)

We top roped (so the stated grades should be lowered and we were safe) but some of the moves were tricky, especially for his first outing.

Good job Youth.:)

Top roping is not something to be looked upon as a lesser style or feat.

Just like skydiving, living to do it again is the most important thing.

Climbing is not supposed to be about danger or daring but instead to be used as a opportunity to build skills.

I would like to say that seems to be exactly as you have done!

I don't look down on Top Roping, it's a fully legitimate form of climbing and offers a safe (provided that the anchors are Bomb) introduction to climbing. Without the need to concentrate upon Pro', gives the climbers chance to spend their energies upon other apects of the climb (climbing technique, for example).

I simply stated that the Abjectival Grade of the climb (but not the Technical Grade of the moves) should be considered lower due to the reduction in exposure.
