ExAFO 0 #1 November 12, 2006 Anyone ride Amtrak? I will be doing so in a few weeks. (Cheaper than driving). Is it ratty like Greyhound, or is it a bit more dignified? ThxIllinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.
SmilingPhoenix 0 #2 November 12, 2006 Probably depends on where you are going and how many cars they have. I used to take the Amtrak from San Diego to LA often and it was a blast. I'd just spend the trip in the snack bar and we'd get drunk. By the time we got wherever we were going, we'd made some new friends and usually got a good story or two for the road.Because life is an adventure - it may not be the one you planned, but then it wouldn't be an adventure! McBeth 0 #3 November 12, 2006 I've only taken Amtrak on the East Coast, not sure what line you will be taking. It is a really awesome way to get from NYC to Philly, faster than driving.
ExAFO 0 #4 November 12, 2006 5 hour trip, Carbondale IL to Chicago. I saw a train this afternoon, an engine pulling three coach cars.Illinois needs a CCW Law. NOW.
McBeth 0 #5 November 12, 2006 Well let me know how it goes... I plan to take a 8 hour trip down the CA coast in December.
bob.dino 1 #6 November 13, 2006 I've only done NYC - Boston, and it was fine. The rolling stock was a little old, and the train wasn't exactly fast, but the train was clean and arrived on time. No complaints. Note: I'm used to European trains, so my standards are fairly high.
PhreeZone 20 #7 November 13, 2006 I've done Chicago to Denver, the cars are not near as nice as some of the ones in the LIRR (Long Island Rail Road) or MTA system, but they are comfortable and suffice. I would figure on it getting about 15 minutes late on the trip, Amtrack still can not figure out how to run on time on longer distances. I was only like 3 hours late on the Denver trip.Yesterday is history And tomorrow is a mystery Parachutemanuals.com
freeflir29 0 #8 November 13, 2006 Quote5 hour trip, Carbondale IL to Chicago I took that exact route about 10 years ago. Then went on all the way to Spokane, WA. Don't remember anything bad about the trip other than a long lay over in Chicago.

Peej 0 #11 November 13, 2006 I've done Chicago O'hare to Rantoul, it was pretty good, the train was clean and there was nothing for me to complain about Advertisio Rodriguez / Sky
airtwardo 7 #12 November 13, 2006 I use to take thak same route all the time in my SALUKI days... Better than a bus, about like a plane as far as seats go...good ride all in all! BUT...cheaper to post a 'lookin' for a ride' if you're in school, I use to get rides for about 1/3 the price of the train. A lotta people drive it on weekends. ~ If you choke a Smurf, what color does it turn? ~
