boinky 0 #1 November 12, 2006 Never doubt the power of how much happiness some little thing can do for a soldier who is overseas and all alone. I sent this little skydiving bear to my son-in-law in a "Halloween" care package. While the picture obviously shows that it brought him a little joy and creativity in an otherwise uptight environment, it also reminds us the seriousness of what they are over there for. Remember the soldiers who are over there fighting for us. Christmas is coming and they'd love nothing better than some little something to take their minds off of the awful task at hand.Nina Are we called "DAWGs" because we stick our noses up people's butts? skymama 37 #2 November 12, 2006 Thank-you for the reminder. My cousin's 19 year old son is a Marine serving in Afghanistan now. We don't usually send Christmas presents to him, but this year we'll put a care package together for sure. Anyone know when we need to mail something in order to get it there in time? She is Da Man, and you better not mess with Da Man, because she will lay some keepdown on you faster than, well, really fast. ~Billvon
WrongWay 0 #3 November 12, 2006 That's fantastic. I know a few people over there now, and a few who just got back safe. Let's just pray that our brothers in arms ALL make it back to their families and friends. Wrong Way D #27371 Mal Manera Rodriguez Cajun Chicken Ø Hellfish #451 The wiser wolf prevails. boinky 0 #5 November 12, 2006 The USPS has this great deal on "flat rate" priority packages. You can shove as much, weight-wise, into these boxes as you can and it still goes priority for only $8.10. You can pick these boxes up at your local post office and they are completely free! They offer two different sized boxes, but the box I regularly use is (according to the measurements on the box given by the postal service) is 13 5/8" L X 11 7/8" W X 3 3/8" D. You can be amazed at how you can "stretch" the size when you're creative. This box even has peel off sticky so you don't need tape to close it. (The other size box will hold odd shaped things, but has no sticky and will need tape to close it). My boxes usually weigh in excess of 6 lbs., but have occasionally weighed over 10 lbs. This delivery is only to US addresses, but DOES include APO's because they are usually still in the USA. Now that only guarantees it getting to the APO in 2-3 days. After that, you're solely dependent on the military and THEIR delivery service. My boyfriend is in Kosovo and his boxes take roughly 7-10 days (that count includes weekend days) to get to him personally. My son in law is somewhere in Iraq (he can't tell us specifically where), but I think his box took about two weeks, but not positive. With the holidays coming up, the mail service is going to be MUCH slower, but priority will get it there a little sooner. One thing to remember though...everyone remembers folks at Christmastime. It's the non-Christmas packages that mean even more, because by then the "good will towards men" has worn off and people forget to remember the soldiers. TheBachelor 5 #8 November 13, 2006 Does anyone know of an organization that puts together care packages for soldiers? In the past, I saw some that accepted donations of magazines, etc. to send, but I can't find the organizations now. I have several years of Maxim Magazine that I'm sure would be appreciated. There are battered women? I've been eating 'em plain all of these years...
