The people who are waiting for the PS3 arent huge gamer nerds like you think... well some of them are.

Most if not all are going to buy the PS3 for 600 bucks and resell it for 3 to 4 thousand dollars when the demand near christmas is super high. Most stores are only getting in an initial shipment of 10-15 units for the entire holiday season so nationwide their is a severe shortage of supply compared to the huge demand.

They are waiting for up to 3 days for this system but if they are lucky enough to score one then they will likely see profits of thousands of dollars.

I know all of this since my roomate is in line in front of Walmart right now hoping to turn 2 days worth of work (is waiting in line work?) into a few grand.

there was an ebay auction where the ps3 (preordered) went for 10 grand.... (and im too lazy to look for the link)

That must be why, at my local Best Buy, I saw people camping out front overnight in tents, awaiting the store opening.
