my turn to ask the computer guru

Try right clicking on My computer, select properties, you will see a tab called Hardware and then a button called device manager. See if your headphone port can be disabled. If not then a am afraid there may not be any way round it, if it is stuck in the sound out port then that will be the only way to play sound out of the machine, unless you have an internal onbaord speaker

1. Get a toothpick.

2. Cut pointy end off.

3. Put a bit of superglue on the end, but not enough to contact the sides of the port.

4. Insert CAREFULLY and hold in place against the broken plug for 5-10 mins to dry.

5. Pull out broken plug.

That's what I've used before to pull them out.;)

darn. can't dissable it... not really a jack stuck in there... last time i had one in there, it broke the connector off the mother board, and now it still thinks there is one in or something, so it won't allow my speakers to play any sound. I'm using a laptop, and the soundcard is a part of the motherboard. comcrap tells me I have to replace my motherboardd, I was hoping there was a way around it, since i am not replacing a motherboard on a 4 yr old laptop.

I looked at finding a way to disable the headphone jack within device manager so that the system wouldn't know the jack was even there, and therefore care that it was plugged up. You may want to check in Device Manager and disable some of the hardware that show up under sound or system devices. One of those may be the headphone jack.

Its also possible that in Control Panel, your sound card may have its own applet, which may allow you to set the headphone/speakers to work all the time, or never, etc. My laptop (Dell 630m) doesn't do this.

Or...maybe you could give your laptop a new sound card:

$49.99. External USB sound card.
Buy/use at your own risk...I don't know if it'll work for sure.

Nope -

The earphone jack is between the sound board and the lappy speakers. When you put the plug in, it breaks the path between the two.

Until you can get the plug out of the jack - no sound.
