Carry-on-rig

What is the latest with airlines and gear.
I assume 30kgs total is still the absolute max on international flights. Do there still freak out if you try and take your rig with carry on luggage?
If i don't have a cypress card, will they freak either way?

I work for airline and I carry mine on all the time w/o any problems. I don't trust the bag smashers, plus being a mechanic we often have chemical spills and stuff in cargo hold to clean / repair. not stuff I'd want on MY RIG!

Ant I just rtravelled from Perth VIa Japan to LA then Miami and BACK and I had NO problems what so ever from any of the airports :)I was plesantly surprised,
I carried my rig in a shoulder type bag as carry n lauagge, and it never caused any concern through the xrays

A little trick I've been doing that works great. If you have a weight belt, take that out of the bag. It's the weights that "red flag" the rig a lot of times. Ever since I take the weights out of the suitcase that my rig is in, and put the weights in one of those bins, my rig goes right on through without a second look. Also remember to take the hook knife off your rig, and put that in your check in bag.

USPA has a link here, about what you'll need to know to travel with your rig.

I've found it's also much quicker to NOT put the rig in a bag. I've flown nurmerous times with the rig over my shoulder and 99% of the time just walked through security, no questions or searches. However everytime I've put the rig in a bag I was made to take it out and had to get it examined and explosives tested. I know the TSA advises you to put it in a bag but in my experience that is just asking for a closer look at it as they cannot see what it is right away I guess.

I have checked my rig in many times with no issues, although we did have some mates that did not make the connecting flights and we had to wait for the next flight to bring the rest of the luggage.

I am not so keen on the carry on with no bag idea, passengers get twitchy.

If you are keen, pack your weights, knives etc in with luggage and take a small parabag with you onto the plane. I normally take my helmet bag with pro track etc on with me as well.

Every time I fly with a rig, I wear it on my back. I've even flown with my BASE rig on my back before and never had a problem.

What's that have to do with me? If they want to get "twitchy" then that's all them.

I have my rig in a very small bag and have had no problems using it as carryon - both for internal flights and international flights. I always carry the FAA and TSA letters in the bag witht he CYPRES card but have not had to use them so far. B|

Man, put the rig in a bag, put the bag on the conveyer belt, walk through the tower thingy, pick up the bag, get on the plane. Easy peasy.

heh....when I flew back in November, I was chosen for the more extensive search 2 out of the 3 flights of my trip. I was carrying my rig in a small gear bag with the rest of my gear checked. Leaving Philadelphia, as I stood spread-eagle being searched, a big guy walked over holding my rig up...."Ma'am, does this belong to you?" "Yes, sir." "Is it a parachute?" "Yes sir." "Do you use this to jump off of bridges?" "No sir. Airplanes." "Ma'am, do you intend to wear this on your flight?" "No sir." LOLOLOL!!!!! All of that with such a serious look on his face. I have no AAD, though. Moved on through with no problem.

I'm pretty new and this weekend will be my first trip taking my new rig.
I just have a quick question and it may sound stupid... why does having a AAD make a difference aren't the planes pressurized
Any help on what to expect/ info about the AAD would be great

thanks
Jeff

Not a stupid question...

Do you have your CYPRES 2 manual? It should have a card in it with a picture of a complete CYPRES equipped X-ray on it.

I think the concern is that with all those wires and cables going between a few boxes, it might look a little suspicious to security personnel if they've never seen an X-ray of a rig, before. You should be fine, though. I've been on 7 flights with my CYPRES-equipped rig, and never had a problem.

My stepson works with the TSA.... my experience with that has just made me reconsider whether to carry on or devote a hard pelican case (with something else so that I can lock it, of course) and check it just to avoid the ignorant TSA types.... and there are a few out there. :S

I travel a lot with my rig and generally in groups. It's funny because typically 6 rigs will make it through and then like the last rig will get flagged.

I talked to the x-ray guy once, just bs'ing cause he was interested in the rigs and he said it's not the cpyres it's more the spring loaded PC on the reserve.

Just in case anyone needs this is the future here is the link to the TSA page regarding skydiving. Prob. a good idea to print this off and carry it with you going though the checkpoint
