wmw999 2,583 #26 November 17, 2006 I used to have trouble with it, and found some simple meditation exercises helped. Even when I don't sleep, it lets me get into a more restful state, so I don't feel quite as awful in the morning. It took awhile for me to start noticing that I was feeling more rested in the morning -- it's definitely not a quick fix. The other thing is that in the last couple of years, since starting to live with an early-to-bed-early-to-rise person, I consistently have less trouble sleeping as well. I always prided myself on being one of those who could take it off both ends (i.e. stay up late and get up early), but, well, I'm older and that doesn't work as well any more Wendy W.There is nothing more dangerous than breaking a basic safety rule and getting away with it. It removes fear of the consequences and builds false confidence. (tbrown)

Oftentime, you'll find yourself waking in the middle of the night, and staying up, as you pass your mid-30's. The older you get, the more it happens. It's a function of getting older. Can't do anything about that. Caffeine. From personal experience, I can tell you that cutting out caffeine (it CAN be done) will reduce insomnia. So that you can do something about. Drinking yourself to sleep will only wake you at 3 am. I sometimes use antihistamines (liquid Benadryl) taken around 10 pm to help me sleep thru the night. That's basically what stuff like Sominex is - antihistamine. Need a nap? Dimetapp!
 StreetScooby 5 #33 November 17, 2006 Quote Get some Ambien. I've yet to find a meditation or self-hypnosis method that works at shutting down the brain (my version of insomnia is almost exclusively of the rapid thoughts variety). They are good for relaxing the body though, and combining them with a ridiculously comfortable bed has allowed me to have reasonably restful nights even when I don't sleep at all. Thankfully, ambien usually works for me too. Blues, Dave"I AM A PROFESSIONAL EXTREME ATHLETE!"
